Baking it in the oven is probably the easiest way. Don't use bleach, you'll never be able to get it out of something porous like wood and it could be harmful to your snake.

I've used the freezer, but then I ended up baking it to dry it out, so it kind of defeated the purpose in the end. :p

I haven't done it personally but have read baking it in an oven for a while at 300degrees. I'd do it very carefully, stand watch, not sure how easy they are to start being on fire :O

You might save some time if you can rub it down well with sand at the lake, which would abrade off any growths like lichen/moss. Then at home, drop it on a foil covered baking pan and bake 1 hr/pound at 200*F. The only difference between this procedure and what I use to process wood for my chinchillas to chew on is the scrubbing at the shore. In my parents' back yard, I just chop off any parts with mold or egg sacks and then soak the smaller bits in water for an hour or so before baking. Depending on the size of the piece, that might be an option too.
