It was pretty much destined to. It was a special election, and while the Jesopublicans are remarkably effective at mobilizing large numbers of voters, the people who are principally against this don't have the kind of motivation (or organization) to go to the polls. Sad, but true.

Also, special elections are a terrible idea for this very reason.
