Well, I am back, for a few days at any rate, because im goin' to visit brett in L.A. in 4 days, but here are some pictures and stories from the last week.
ok, so as our plane is coming in for landing, I kind of freaked out. There was a small beach, then a road, and then a fence. After the fence, the runway began. Between the ocean and the runway was about 10 yards or land. I didn't think our 757 wouldve made it, but we did.
This is maho beach:
right after that fence on the left was the airport. Yeah, not a lot of room.
There were plenty of these signs though:
and they weren't exxagerating either. This guy Garret we met told us how he was just hangin out on maho beach, watching planes land, when a 747 went to take off. Since the runway is about 300 feet shorter then the recommended length for a 747, those guys had to gun it. And let me tell you, standing 30 feet behind 4 turbines is NOT PLEASANT. When we did it, the sand began whipping around like crazy. It felt like some one was hitting you really hard with a belt sander, and it was especially shitty when you were wearing only shorts and a hat. Anyways, Garret told us he saw a kid start running into the path of destruction behind the jets right befoire take off of a 747, and as they throttled up, this little kid was blown atleast 10 feet into the ocean. just by the force of the jets. it was nuts.
ok i jacked this picture from airliners.net, but it paints the picture rather well.
heres my bro on that same beach with a 747 coming in for the landing
ok who else can honestly say they ate at a TACO BELL//KFC in the carribbean?
we also rented this car, it was rediculous. My brother taught my how to drive stick on it though, jay's RSX, here i come!
we met a few french people, the ones that spoke enlish were cool, and the one that barely spoke it was hilarious, mainly because i didnt understand him half the time
this place is an alcaholic's dream home though, because for example a liter of absolut was 6$. Johhny Walker black label was nearly 100, instead of the roughly 200 they sell it for here, grey goose at its cheapest was 18$. They also sold absinthe, which i brought back. A small flask was only $10. Also, they had this booze called mount gay rum, and me having the maturity of a 8 year old, thought it was hilarious.
heres a night shot i did of our hotel, its long exposure and sort of blurry
h
this is me and my bro in philipsburg, the main city on the dutch side, with some cruise ships in the back
this is me, drinking PRESIDENTE beer like it was cancer vaccine. Hey, the drinking age there is 16, so it was legal.
and finally a map of the island.
the airport was right above that 'dutch side' flag, and our hotel was directly across the lagoon. in one day, we left our hotel, went to philipsburg (low right) then to orient bay, which is upper right, then to the airport, and back to our hotel, doing a figure 8 type thing around the whole island. It took no more than 5 hours, plus we shopped and ate, and hiked to the highest peak on the mountian in that time. The driving there is insane, though. Every one drives either these:
or
that van was shorter than my nissan sentra. Ofcourse there was a variety of other really small cars and vans and trucks, but then you would get now and then some douche in a hummer. Keep in mind that the roads here are about 6 feet wide per lane, with no sidewalks. Plus the elevation changed all the time, and climbing a 70 degree incline in that small ass hyundai took for ever. Driving was definately brutal out there, considering there were TWO TRAFFIC LIGHTS on the whole island.
overall the vacation was fun, but it turns out we went "off-season" and there werent many people in our hotel. the dutch side had more people, plus most of their shit cost american dollars, and not euros, like the french side.
Today, I came back, and almost immediatly left for jay's house. I brought a gift I purchased for jer. Get this, i got him a bottle of this shit called Puschkin Time Warp. It was 3 euros, and it said "bear power energy" on it. Thats the only reason i got it, but that stuff was actually pretty good. It was like an energy drink that tasted very fruity, but shit, for 3 euros a bottle, id drink it every day. Jer called me around 1 in the morning telling me how it was the best gift he had ever received.
I gave jay something even better, and much more expensive, that i think a lot of people enjoyed there. The rest of that stuff im bringin to LA for me and b-hubs and sylvia to down.
Say bye to Jay if you haven't yet you ungrateful jerks, and Jay and Bowers, best of luck to you guys, see you in october, and then again many times in 4 years.
