I hope you don't mind me messaging you here, but I saw your tax question posted on the KC forum, and I wanted to bring up a (non tax related) point that you might want to consider when deciding which side of the state line to live on...
Unless you plan on living in Lawrence, I would try to avoid living in KS. I know everyone in the mid-West likes to pretend that they're more progressive than they really are, but as a Californian who has been forced to indure more bigotry than I care to remember, I can assure you that the atitudes I've encountered have been... well, not... uh, particularly friendly towards anyone who is remotely outside the "mainstream". Neither state is all that great in terms of tolerance, but Missouri has seemed a bit more bareable-- particularly in areas like brookside/the plaza and downtown/the rivermarket. Anyway, I don't want to scare you off on the place, but it's just something to consider in term of how much you'll actual be able to enjoy where you live.

Thanks for your insight. At this point, it's almost unavoidable to live anywhere but Kansas because my partner would risk taking to big of a tax hit.

Would you mind sharing examples of what you've experienced in Kansas?
