Me and my crappy music musings, pt. 1

Again, I'm pretty much doing these for my own amusement. And because this is a better path to take then not writing at all. And I uploaded lots of stuff too.

10 Favorite Things I heard this year (that were released this year):

10. The Beat the Devil demo:  Yeah, it's a demo. But there weren't many albums that I actually bought this year that really stood out to me, and there were alot of albums I meant to get that I didn't end up getting. Anyway, I would probably still like this more, even if I had heard those albums. I'm not just saying all this to kiss Christina's friend's ass---Shilpa is really, really cool. And she plays the harmonium! There are demo clips on the website, but my personal favorite is "Shine in Exile."

9. Franz Ferdinand--You Could Have it so Much Better: The first three songs on this album are so good they make me want to take ecstacy and flail around wildly. That's quite a feat, because I've never wanted to take ecstacy in my life. But even if you're sXe, this album is still vastly enjoyable. Of course its overrated and slightly too long, but c'mon, they still take public transportation. And you've gotta love a band that does that. (Walk Away--demo version).

8. Goldfrapp--Supernature: Damn you, you sexy woman! Why didn't I give in to you sooner? This album Madonna and all the other dance divas a good swift kick in the rear, whilst wearing glittering red heels to boot! (Number 1)

7. Patrick Wolf--Wind in the Wires: This boy makes me feel very, very tingly. I'll keep it at that. (The Libertine)

6. Talkshow Boy--Watch as I Perform my own Tracheotomy: So, I was reading this review of Talkshow Boy on his MySpace that compared him to Bis. This made me very excited, because it brought me to another realization as to why I find him so irresistable. I guess all the cheesy blips take me back to 8th grade and my long-gone New Transistor Heroes cd.  But also, Talkshow Boy is totally brilliant. How can I not love a song that includes the statement, "Anarchy in the FCUK?" And from seeing his promo pictures, I can definately say that I would let him tweek my moog. (Freaky Teen Fashion--Time for a Makeover!)

5. Marianne Faithfull--Before the Poison: Of the two newer Marianne Faithfull albums, Kissin Time is stronger overall, especially since it spawned promo photos of she and Beck, with Beck looking like her bashful grandson.Still, PJ Harvey + Nick Cave +Marianne is a great combination, as evidenced when Faithfull's version of "No Child of Mine" is better than PJ's from Uh-Huh Her (I know the whole song isn't included on PJ's album, but you get the drift).

4. Devendra Banhart--Cripple Crow: The first time I actually saw enough of Devendra Banhart to pay attention was on an Adult Swim promo. The whole experience consisted of me staring at the television screen wondering, "who is this skinny hippie man playing guitar? And why is he on Adult Swim?" followed by, "oooohhh." I'm ashamed to say that I never actually heard his voice until this year. But I'm so grateful I did, because its melted my hippie-hating heart. (Santa Maria de Feira)

3. Fiona Apple--Extraordinary Machine: Sometimes I wonder why I like Fiona Apple so much. Reading silly music magazines  actually reminds me why I do: Although she is going to be touring with Coldplay, she admitted in Rolling Stone that she's never listened to them (haha, even Coldplay's support acts think they suck!), and in Blender, she said the following:

*The thing that used to make me such a sad kid...Was that I wanted a family of friends. And I thought that I was never going to have that because there's never going to be people sitting around a room having fun, when somebody stands up and goes, "Hey, we should call up Fiona, because it would be more fun if Fiona was here!"...*

And at reading something like that, I become Christian Bale in Velvet Goldmine, pointing to the tv and shouting, "That's me, Dad! That's me!", when Jonathan Rhys-Meyers says he likes girls and boys.

Oh yeah, her lyrics are quite good too. (Please Please Please, unreleased version).

2. Beck--Guero/Guerolito: Where Guero tripped up, Guerolito sort of helped it back up. Still, Guero is missing something, and I don't know what. But Beck's voice has never sounded better, and I can still consider "Go it Alone" a good song despite the fact that Jack White plays bass on it, and I've heard it in the NYU Starbucks far too many times. I favor some of the Guerolito remixes to the original tunes, particularly the "Ghettochip Malfunction" version of "Hell Yes."

1. Sleater-Kinney--The Woods: I've listened to other albums more, but this is the most important of the albums I heard this year. Even though the critics spazzed over it far too much, it is really, really good. It has to be played all the way through for the full effect, which doesn't happen too much nowadays. And it's actually a pleasure to listen to all the way through, as its miraculously filler-free! Definately overrated, but definately special, too. (Modern Girl).

7 Favorite Songs (that I didn't cover yet):

7. Doves--Black and White Town ( oh fuck, the intro's so hooky!)

6. Harry Potter Supergroup--Do the Hippogryff (I really like to believe that Jarvis performs this for his spawn at bedtime)

5. Beck--Girl (A song about killing your girlfriend, but the general public thinks its about love)

4. The Strokes--You Only Live Once (The lyrics, and that "nice nice nice nice nice" part, are so endearingly stupid, that i can't help but love it)

3. !!!--Get Up (simply, simply awesome)

2. The Pipettes--School Uniform (I think I love everything about them. And the one Pipette is Welsh! Go her!)

1. Talkshow Boy--OMG I <3 Livejournal (And my Livejournal <3's me)

*I don't think I need to say anything else about that last song. I would have uploaded 10 songs, but I'm really really tired.
