Santogold is neither an American M.I.A. nor a black Karen O.

Word UP. Especially on the M.I.A. part - I cannot understand why there's some kind of rivalry developing between their fans, or why people are accusing one of ripping off the other. They're friends! Still, this doesn't take away from the fact that I loved Santogold's album a lot more than I thought I would, half her songs sing my life, and Creator is pretty much my new anthem. Now I'm feeling pretty ignorant that this and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! are the only albums on this list I've actually heard, but maybe I should use the last six hours of 2008 to make up for lost time?

Happy New Year, Maria! I seriously hope 2009 is a better one for botyh of us, and I shall do everything I can to help you stick to your lone resolution.

I agree, the M.I.A./Santogold rivalry is so very silly. I have to say though, I like Santogold's more than "Kala," but then again I feel Santogold is more accessible overall. It's strange--"Creator" is actually one of my least favorite tracks on the album! It was the first song of hers that I'd heard, so that's another reason it took me so long to give in and listen to the whole album.

And don't feel ignorant! If you're interested in any album in particular, I'd be happy to help you out.

Happy New Year to you, too! I hope it's a better one for both of us too, although you've definitely got a few things to look forward to :ahemDevotoahem: I've actually got a few resolutions that I'll be posting in a minute, but I will definitely let you know if I need any help with the most important one:)

I think that's the best thing about Santogold, though - there's something for everyone. I personally prefer electronic squalling to indie rock, and hope a potential follow-up would move more in that direction, but it's pretty impressive that she can take on both so well.

Indeed, my 2009 seems to have plenty going for it already, and I hope some awesomely exciting things can happen for you too, musically or otherwise! Working towards your resolutions in itself seems a good place to start.

Great list! I count myself very lucky to have seen both Spiritualized and Nick Cave in the same day. I went to All Tomorrow's Parties earlier this year in Sydney, curated by Nick Cave, and it basically the best day of my life. I was a huge fan of the Bad Seeds before going to it so was really excited to see their musical influences/stuff they loved. Gotta admit though, the only people I knew before going were the Bad Seeds, the Saints, Conway Savage and the Laughing Clowns. It was held at Cockatoo Island, which is a tiny island 15 minutes off Sydney Harbour that was originally a jail and is now infested with sea gulls. It was just amazing. I think I liked it better than I didn't know most of the people playing because I got to discover bands like Afrirampo, Psarandonis, Spiritualized, James Blood Ulmer and Silver Apples. Now I'm a huge fan of all of them. I really need to put up my pictures from the day.

Also, I agree with you about Abattoir Blues, except my favourite Nick Cave song comes from that album - There She Goes My Beautiful

I had a pipe dream of going to All Tomorrow's Parties this year, but I had neither the time nor money to do so, unfortunately. It sounded tremendous, though! You're quite lucky for getting to go! I've been meaning to look into that Afrirampo band, I heard they were awesome. I'm sure seeing The Saints was pretty damn cool as well. I'd love to see any photos you took of the day!

"There She Goes My Beautiful World" is one of the better songs on "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus", I'd agree. And I do have a really soft spot for "Breathless", as well as a few others.

Afrirampo are amazing live. They kept on screaming "WE WANT TO HAVE PARTY AT NICK CAVE'S HOUSE. IN MELBOURNE! WITH FAMILYYYYY!!!" and at the end of their set one of them took the drum kit, ran into the audience, sat in the middle and started playing it tribal style while the other got everyone to hold onto the person in front of them and dance in a circle.
