This weekend, I accompanied my friend while she went bra shopping at Victoria's Secret and Macy's. Miraculously, she found two in her size (32DD) that were on sale. Score

A friend of mine did a bra fitting party a few years ago. It was much like a tupperware party where one person hosts a party for her friends, and the guests socialize and learn something and the sales lady tries to sell you her wares. I didn't make it to the party but I wished I could have. It's a multi-layer marketing thing where they try to convince you to join the team afterword or host more parties.
You could totally join that company and make a killing doing that, and using the introductions to find new corset clients. I'd love to host a party like that and keep meaning to actually. Friends of mine from church were talking about doing it a few months ago, but I haven't gotten around to looking up the information yet.
I am actually seriously considering opening a shop. I have pretty strong opinions about fit, so I'm not sure I'd do well in an existing MLM structure, but if you have info, do send it along!
I have a business plan and a GIANT to-do list.
....Speaking of which, do you still do any videography?
I can ask my friend who hosted the party for the info.
I officially closed my videography business as of December 31st, 2012, but I still have all my equipment. The city of Sunnyvale wanted me to send in quarterly reports about my paper bag usage numbers or face $500 fines. I said forget it and closed up shop. I have one customer per year and I deliver over the internet.
The associate first measured around my armpits, across the top of my chest.
I had heard other stories of VS measuring like that and I Was sorta confused. The one time I got measured at VS, back in college, they did not do it like that. They measured under my boobs, like normal. I wonder when they changed that.
My theory on why they do it is because it sort of automatically adds 4 to the underbust measurement, which is how band sizes are traditionally calculated.
The problem with +4 is that it's outdated. It was originally used because back in the day, bras didn't have as much elastic as they do now. But construction and materials have changed, and for some reason, the method for size calculation hasn't. The other effect that it has is that if you are adding 4 to everyone, you're able to stuff people into a narrower size range. If someone has 8" of difference between under & overbust, they should probably be in a G cup, but if you add 4 first, then miraculously they're in a D. Of course this also means that some people end up with negative cup sizes, but hey, you can just stick them in an A or B cup and it'll be fine, right?
I have found that any sort of "professional" fitting will be designed to get you into a bra that that store sells, even if it is really super imperfect. You could be a 34J and they'll be like "yep, you're obviously a 40DD, and you're in luck, because we have that!"
Anytime I ever went into VS with my sister, I just stood in the corner and gave everyone a Leave Me Alone Look. :)
Do you offer consults? My housemate has been having Bra Drama for quite a while, and even if she can't yet buy actual bras from you (until the shop happens), I suspect good advice would be quite valuable to her...
I do! I'm sorry to hear she's been having problems.
In fact I'll offer a fit check via Skype as one of the perks for my upcoming crowdfunding campaign, which will launch in January. If she has specific questions, you can always ask here.

As you know, I have similar issues. :)
