I'm the sort who would sorta gently shove back (increasingly less gently if I didn't get results) until he got the picture instead of saying something. I spent an entire plane flight with my elbow jammed against some dude who was trying to lean past the armwrest. Neither of us said anything.

Note: I am not actually recommending this strategy. I probably would have been more comfortable if I'd said something early on but after a few minutes of him not getting it I was like "well I'll be damned if I am going to move my arm or say anything now!" I can be stubborn like that.

Yeah, I've also employed this strategy to reclaim at least part of arm-rests.

Maybe I grew up in a smaller space, but I have never understood this way of sitting politely. It might be for a different reason -- one never crosses their legs in public -- which also solves a lot of problems with skirts as well as guys taking up all the space on a bench.
