Contemporary references definitely throw me for a loop. King had quite a few in the last few Dark Tower books (9/11, Harry Potter, etc.--not to mention his own near-death experience) although those weren't quite as fresh as Katrina. Maybe I'm just used to reading older/more fantastic books, because my interpretation of a story's setting tends to transcend time. When I come across something that's actually happened, it blows my mind a bit until I adjust my thinking.

By the way, your post made me even more excited than I already was to read Cell. Entertainment Weekly magazine printed the first two chapters in the current issue just to taunt me and my empty wallet (as well as the long waiting list at the library.) Blast them all!
