Note: I first posted this over at GeekMom for our steampunk week last week. But I stole it to put in my own blog too.

You've probably already discovered them, but may I recommend that you head over to www.studiofoglio.com and read some of the Girl Genius graphic novels (all the material is online, and free)? Kaja Foglio is credited with the invention of "gaslamp fantasy", which is related to steampunk, in a way.

I'm not a big steampunk afficionado or terribly knowledgeable or anything, so I've just enjoyed what I've read and not thought too deeply about it. Your analysis of its appeal was fascinating to read and made a lot of sense. (And you worked in the Vorkosigan books, for which you get major bonus points. *g*)

I try to work the Vorkosigan books in as much as possible. :)

I have the latest on my kitchen table. I won it in a tweeter contest. But I"m being mullish about reading because I've seen the end in stores. I just don't want to go there!
