I think it's interesting that you attribute the paparazzi thing to people being "starved for attention"--that never seemed obvious to me, but now that you say it, it seems totally right. I haven't read a lot about celebrity culture, but it makes sense that to the extent that we attempt to live vicariously through stars, we want them to be mobbed by press and fawned over and scrutinized because whether positive or negative, the attention testifies to their significance. And who doesn't want to be significant
