I think the main reason they put expiration dates on debit cards is so that you can use them as credit cards. The expiration date is ingrained in the system, and you can't order anything online with a card that doesn't have an expiration date, because the forms always make you fill in that box. And you can't run a debit card or credit card manually on a cash register without filling in an expiration date. So basically, I'm going with the appendix explanation.
