I've been looking forward to trying out
this new corset pattern from Butterick ever since it came out. I use my corsets for steampunk, so historical accuracy isn't my first concern. I'm planning a corset covered with patches so I though I'd try this corset with straps due to the large area that gives me to place patches.
Not knowing how this pattern runs in terms of size, I started with making a sz 20 corset according to the pattern. My measurements are actually a few inches larger than those given for sz 20, but knowing that it might run large I though I might be pretty close to fitting. I measured the pattern pieces and for the waist came up with 33" after subtracting for seam allowance. As the waist measurement for sz 20 was 34", I thought this might actually be a decently sized corset pattern. I was wrong. It's way too big on me.
It would actually be a really nice fit for a vest or bodice, but for a corset it's HUGE. I can pinch together an entire panel at my waist and hips, although not as much in the bust. So, for anyone who was wondering about this pattern, it does run about 2 sizes big. And the bust is probably smaller than most corset patterns, so large busted women may have to enlarge that area.
I'm going to play around some more with this one, but not for a little while, so I thought I'd go ahead and post. I definitely want to either lower the front or lengthen the straps. It's a bit too modest for me as is, but that might be due to the length of my torso/shoulders.
