I usually use the employment insurance example when trying to explain this. In a workplace your insurance premiums (whether you or your company pays them) is figured basically by the "health" of the company. Each time a person goes to see a doctor beyond the normal checkups, or goes into the hospital it "dings" the insurance for the company (for lack of a better word). Now if you have one very sick person and one very healthy person it kind of balances out. What becomes a problem is when you are dealing with a larger number of sick people
