Wife

Perhaps they could go away somewhere. Somewhere no one could find them, where no one would know them…the Senator from Naboo and The Hero With No Fear. They could just be Padme and Anakin.

Padme slowly rubbed the rounded bulge of her belly through the soft velvety material of her clothing. The baby was growing quickly now, she could no long completely hide her changing body. People had noticed, she could tell, though no one had yet said anything. She pressed her lips together. It was none of their business, she had as much right to have a child as anyone else did.

But…it wasn’t just about her, was it? What about Anakin? She was quite sure that the “no attachment” idea that the Jedi believed in did not include fathering a child. Or having a secret wife.

Wife. She rolled the word around in her head and it never ceased to amaze her. She couldn’t help the warm sense of satisfaction that spread through her. She was Anakin’s wife.

And hopefully he would be home soon. So she could tell him about the baby. It didn’t seem right that he didn’t know yet but he had been gone for a long time. He sent her messages from time to time, though it was dangerous to do so, simple words that required her to read between the lines. But she’d not wanted to tell him he would be a father on a small piece of flimsy. She wanted to see his face, his eyes, when she told him. So she would know that everything between them was still okay.

And what of the new worries Bail and Mon had hinted at? They looked to her to lead them, she knew that though nothing had been asked. They just assumed she would take a stand against the growing unrest in the Republic. Could she do it? Step away from it and let someone else be the leader.

And what would Anakin think about it all? They viewed things…differently. He was impatient with all the long-winded talk and negotiations. But would he agree with the idea of her giving it all up to be wife and mother? Would she be able to do that even though the idea was growing in appeal every day?

The baby squirmed suddenly and she felt a smile cross her face. That movement had seemed so startling at first, even a little frightening. Proof beyond doubt that she and Anakin had created a child out of their love for each other.

She pressed her hand firmly against her side. A boy? She thought so though she could give no reason why. Just a feeling. Would he look like his father? A fuzzy image of a small tow-headed boy with eyes of a certain shade a blue materialized in her mind…

“My lady…”

The voice seemed to come from a distance away and Padme dismissed its importance until it was repeated.

“My lady?”

Padme looked up and met the other woman’s worried eyes, then glanced quickly around the room. The meeting was over, many seats were already empty. She felt her face flush hot.

“My lady…are you well? I noticed…well, you were very quiet…and…”

The woman’s voice trailed off as her eyes slid down over Padme’s rounded form.

Padme straightened abruptly and stood, gritting her teeth as she felt her body fight to balance itself, another new development that had plagued her recently. She pulled her overdress more closely around her middle.

“I’m fine, just…going over a few things in my mind. You recorded the meeting?”

“Yes, my lady, as always.”

“Good. There are a few things I want to listen to again.”

They made their way through to the outer room, joining those others who were slow in leaving. Padme nodded to several and walked carefully down the long hallway that led to the elevators, telling herself that it was not unusual to feel their eyes on her back and that they were only curious as to her political stand on current matters and not on her personal circumstances.

Anakin, please hurry home. I need you.
