All his life Anakin had been raised to view the Force as his master. Though it was neither viewed as a god, or even an entity, it was worshipped for its life-bearing qualities. The Jedi’s ultimate goal was to embody the light side. To the Sith, the Force was worshipped in a different way. It was considered the ultimate weapon, the scales that held the balance of chaos and power. Their goal wasn’t to embody it, rather to claim and manipulate the dark side to their will.

As Anakin curled up with Dormé and their children under the blankets of their massive bed, he felt as though he had found the balance his former masters always preached, but couldn’t understand. Though he was far from understanding, the ways of the Force, Anakin was certain that this was what it meant to embrace the light side of the Force.

It was routine for Dormé and Anakin to either read or tell a story to their many children before their bedtime. The younglings waited anxiously for their ama to begin, their eyes filled with eager joy. Their emotions were vibrant and filled with love. A perfect reflection of all he was taught to avoid. While the Jedi discouraged such attachments; Anakin learned first-hand just how much it was needed. His family was what saved him from the dark side.

“Ama, tell us about how you met Daddy!” Aené asked eagerly.

The others soon joined in all eagerly encouraging their mother to say yes to their big sister’s request.

Anakin smiled in amusement as he watched on, his fingers now clumsily twisting Aené’s blonde hair into buns. Despite the fact, he was terrible at it; their daughters always loved it when their Daddy did their hair in pleats or buns.

As Dormé began to tell the story of how they had met and later fell in love, Anakin’s thoughts drifted to the past. He could still remember the stories he heard as a child, both from his mother and from the Jedi Order. All of them spoke of wars between the light and the dark. Now, years later, he wondered if it really was as obvious as that.

To the Jedi, Anakin had been their Chosen One, the light side in physical form. To the Sith, he was the great weapon of the darkness. But was it really that simple?

Dormé cheerfully spoke of how Anakin had rescued her from the separatists who had kidnapped her and how she saved him from drowning right after. Anakin soon jumped in, offering his dramatic -albeit comical- side of the story. His re-enactment of his attempts to escape sea monsters while drowning in waist high water caused their children and Dormé to burst into laughter.

It wasn’t long before the tale took a more serious turn. Neither spoke of the suffering they had gone through for one another, or the fact that no one understood their love. Instead, they focused on the positive, concentrating on the fact it was their love that gave them strength.

Their children listened intently their expressions filled with awe and admiration. To them, their daddy was a noble knight and their ama was a queen. After their tale reached its conclusion, Anakin noticed most of their children had fallen asleep on their bed. With great care, he carried their children off to their own beds as his thoughts filled with the memory of his mother’s words.

Without the night, we would never see the stars. It is because of the dark that we learn to love and appreciate the light.

Smiling at the thought, Anakin tucked their children into bed before watching as Dormé kissed them goodnight. It was then Anakin realized a truth both the Jedi and the Sith had missed. Dormé had always been the light to his darkness. Now his single ray of light had become so much more than a friend. She was his beloved and his saviour. Only through her love could he finally learn to control his darkness and embrace the light side.

His family was his life now, his masters, the ones he wanted to serve. After years of searching for peace, he finally found it through the love of his family and with it came complete harmony.
