Lacquer Refurb

A little while back I had a startlingly cool find amid the usual lackluster Goodwill tchotchkes: a Chinese lacquer chest with an unusually colored crane pattern and a variety of intriguing drawers, priced a mere $6. What are the overall dimensions? Is possibly that there is one more mystery area? The front has that square near the center that seems big enough for something to hide in it.

It's 12"w x 10"d x 9" h. You got me curious... that little square area is solid all the way back to the back drawers that run across the width, so if there is an access there, I haven't found it! Maybe inside there's a note that says, "help, I'm trapped in a Chinese lacquer factory!"
