Rookwood Family Tree)
Augustus Rookwood is the only son of Alexander Rookwood of Stenningfield, Suffolk by his second wife Dorothea. The family was an old and influential one in the area, having held the manor of Stenningfield since Edward I, and had for generations been involved in the politics of the wizarding world. However, when Augustus was seven his father was gifted a small territory in Rajasthan, India, where he spent his youth. By this time Dorothea, who had always been sickly, was weakening, and spent much of her time in bed: Augustus was left to his own devices and became adept at avoiding the attentions of the governess hired to school him. He spent much of his time out on the tea plantations that surrounded the family's mountain villa near Nagapur, practicing his spell work on the local children, free from the restrictions placed on those of his age in Britain.
In this way he became fascinated with the process and theory of magic, often conducting his own experiments with a clinical detachment the local children found unnerving, and which earned him a reputation even as a young boy as both a scholar and a highly amoral individual. Growing up away from wizarding society meant he had little contact with anyone of his own abilities save for his parents - his mother who he rarely saw, and his father who to him was a figure of great potency - and this quickly lead him to form the opinion that he, along with all other wizards, had a duty to shepherd muggles in the right direction: away from the doom they almost certainly represented. They were weak creatures; dirty, ignorant and willfully uninformed. They seemed not to care for his experiments at all, and were so easily affected by the least little spell he cast on them as to be like beasts, or flies: easily broken and present in hordes.
At the age of 11, Augustus' father contracted malaria while out hunting and was bedridden for three months. His illness had a profound effect on young Augustus, who until then had thought of the man as distant and immovable - entirely safe from harm. He was devastated, but more than this: outraged that such a thing might happen to a being so superior to those that surrounded him. In the winter of that year the family moved back to England, and took up residence at 42, Half Moon Street, a large house in Mayfair, London. His father resumed his political career with great success, and Augustus was given a place at Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Ravenclaw.
There he excelled at Potions, Arithmancy and Herbology, but kept largely to himself. In his house this was not uncommon, and when called upon to do so he exhibited the confidence and self-sufficiency one might expect from any Slytherin. His unflinching efficiency and consistent performance earned him the position of Ravenclaw prefect in his sixth year, a position he relished, carrying out his duties strictly and even becoming disliked by some in his house, but always careful not to abuse his authority.
After leaving school he was offered an internship and subsequent permanent contract at the Department of Mysteries, and was recruited into the ranks of the Death Eaters as a spy nearly a year later. He worked in the Department until 1981, when he was turned in by Igor Karkaroff. During this time he lived in a rather impressive
flat on Old Gloucester Street, Bloomsbury, London.
He spent the following years in Azkaban, and was freed during the mass breakout in January 1996. He was also present at the battle of the Department of Mysteries later that year. During his time in Azkaban - which he did not deal with at all well, despite managing to keep his sanity more or less intact - his manner is understandably significantly different.
Appearance:
Augustus is of average height at 5' 11", and slight build, edging on the thin side, and in his later years displays a pallour from his time spent in Azkaban. He often looks tired due to the late nights he spends at his own enigmatic research. He favours dark, well-cut plain robes, and although his clothes are always understated, they are his one extravagance, and he spends a lot of money having them made. He is always well dressed, and can be relied upon to make an excellent impression when he needs to.
He has an aquiline nose but otherwise delicate features; a sudden, usually unexpected, wolfish grin, but is prone to a slight sneer or smirk when interacting with others. He's handsome enough, but nothing out of the ordinary. His hair is a non-descript brown which he wears short and neat, despite its efforts to the contrary, and grows as he gets older down to just below his jawline. It starts to go grey early, in his mid-thirties, while in Azkaban. He's always meticulously clean-shaven, unless he's in Azkaban. He is far sighted and wears glasses when working or reading, though sometimes he forgets them.
Strengths and Weakness:
Augustus' strength is his mind. He has no particular overabundance of magical power, and without his wand is more or less defenseless. What he does have is strict mental control and concentration, and a great deal of stubbornness.
Brief overview:
Augustus is confident and slightly disparaging of most others irrespective of their wealth or lack thereof, family connections or allegiances - his manner can be abrupt no matter who he is speaking to, and he has does not modulate his behaviour for others, even his superiors - with the notable exception of Lord Voldemort. However, he is also self-serving enough to know when to capitulate to others if his safety is threatened, and does not tend to be purposefully malicious: his manner is nothing personal, in other words.
Augustus Rookwood is a brilliant man with no scruples whatsoever. He is not so much immoral as amoral. Coming as he does from a long and distinguished line of wizarding politicians and academics, he excels in his research for Voldemort into magical weaponry and eugenics, utilising any means necessary to further his progress.
