Perfect
Anthony Goldstein is perfect in every way. Kevin knows this; it's something he's thought about a lot over the years, something he's had time to go over until the theory is as perfect as Anthony.
He's smarter than Kevin, always seems to have the answers without trying, has better handwriting (not hard) and there's something in the way Anthony writes his lowercase that makes Kevin wish it was tattooed in his skin, all black ink and red and curled beneath his navel. Kevin is intuitive about things and sometimes surprises himself in lessons by having a sudden revelation, but Anthony always seems to understand, inherently, whatever it is they're supposed to be doing.
He's more popular than Kevin, and he gets along with everybody. Kevin can't think of anyone Anthony doesn't get along with, can't quite imagine anyone not liking him. Anyone except Kevin, that is.
Kevin finds it hard to talk to people, hard to make them stay long enough to let him finish, and so he has learned to keep it to himself, a constant monologue of things he would say if only there was anyone to say it to. And then there's Anthony, who just seems to know, without trying, exactly what to say and how to say it. People smile at him, smile back at him, when they only ever give Kevin that Look that makes his skin crawl, and then they turn away.
Anthony flirts. He does it all the time and it drives Kevin mad how everyone flirts back, how Terry and Anthony might as well be fucking, how they probably are, how Anthony makes Michael blush and smile and how Stephen gets that odd look on his face when Anthony's beaming at him, the one that makes Kevin's heart hurt. Kevin can't even talk to the one person in the world that he fancies, because Padma is just so very distant, up on some plateau above his head and doesn't even know he exists, probably, except as an annoying shadow who trails behind her from lesson to lesson.
And, damnit, Anthony is a prefect and that's just so very typical, so unspeakably fucking irritating, not that Kevin had a chance or wanted it for himself at all, but still, it makes him want to swallow Anthony's prefect badge and choke on it.
Anthony. Anthony, Anthony, Anthony, and Kevin wishes he could hit him sometimes, break that perfect face into a billion little pieces; instead he scrawls anti-Semitic doggerel on the back of his Potions notes and charms it away because that's just wrong.
So when Anthony pins him to the wall of the dorm one morning when everyone else has already gone down to breakfast and demands to know why Kevin keeps staring at him, Kevin just snaps, "Because I hate you!"
Anthony looks incredulous, absolutely gobsmacked, and Kevin realises what he's said. "You hate me?" Anthony's face screws up in hurt confusion. "Why?"
"I ..." Why, exactly, does Kevin hate him? "Because you're this ... incredible, unbelievable, perfect, gorgeous angel and, and I'll never be as ... good as you."
More confusion, slightly less hurt. "You think I'm gorgeous?"
Kevin can't actually answer that, not with words, but it turns out not to matter because that's the moment when Anthony smiles and leans in and kisses him, and Kevin discovers that, while he himself has never kissed anything more exciting than his hand, Anthony is really very good at it. Brilliant at it, actually, and Kevin fists his hands in Anthony's shirt and ...
Later, after Terry's busted in on them and demanded to know why Anthony isn't eating toast like a sane man and where the fuck are Kevin's pants, Anthony tries to tell Kevin that he's not really perfect. Not at all. But Kevin finds it very hard to believe him.
After all, isn't that what someone who was perfect would say?
