1. Pluto - Clare and the Reasons
Chin up, Pluto
Stars still want you
And we down here do too
You know what to do
Just keep on keeping on
Merlin watched the moon as it arced through the sky and traced patterns among the stars. The fire he and Arthur had made flickered feebly, but Merlin made no move to rekindle it. In all the time they’d been running he felt content for the first time, with Arthur’s gold head in his lap and a cool breeze winding its way through his hair. He looked down at Arthur, who had fallen asleep and smiled fondly. They’d survive, he was sure of it.
2. All at Sea - Co Co Beaux
Like a warm drink
It seeps into my soul
Please just leave me
Right here on my own
Arthur felt strong, confident. His sword in his hand, the sun glinting on its sharp edge and the familiar weight of his armor resting on his shoulders. The strange beast in front of him tossed its head and let loose an unearthly cry, and Merlin shifted next to him, but it felt right to Arthur; a foe at his front, Merlin at his side, and Camelot at his back.
3. All the Love In Your Hands - Thirteen Senses
I was breathing
All the oxygen that’s left
I surrender
Put my hands up in the air
I waited for you there
Merlin gasps as Arthur bites into the flesh where his neck meets his shoulder. He turns his head and ducks down to catch Arthur’s mouth with his own, and nips at Arthur’s bottom lip, drawing a gasp from him. Their tongues slide to meet each other, and it’s all slick heat and Merlin is drowning, drowning in Arthur and he doesn’t want air ever again even as his lungs burn for it. All he wants is Arthur, his hands, his mouth, this powerful body moving with him, over him. Arthur is everything now, and he always will be. Merlin can feel it somewhere in the far reaches of his mind with a kind of certainty he has never known before.
4. Somebody Told Me - The Killers
Breaking my back
Just to know your name
Seventeen tracks
And I’ve had it with this game
Arthur fills with rage at the sight of Merlin, laying limp on the ground, a trickle of blood running down from the corner of his mouth. He sees red, and the bandits don’t stand a chance. He whirls amid their frantic attempts to bring him down again, fists flying, and he feels like he is moving faster than he has ever moved in his life. Abruptly he is standing in the clearing alone, an ax he doesn’t remember acquiring in his hand and Merlin at his feet. He hopes it’s not too late.
5. You Won’t Be Mine - Matchbox Twenty
It’s almost like being free
And I know soon you will be
Over the lies
You’ll be strong
You’ll be rich in love
And you will carry on
But no, oh no
No you won’t be mine
Merlin sips his wine and watches Arthur and Gwen over the rim of his glass. He’s slouched low in his seat, near the back, but has a perfect view of the dance floor, watching them twirl slowly together. Gwen is lovely in her white dress, and Arthur is exquisite in his tux, as always. Merlin tries not to feel bitter, tries not to remember, tries to pretend. The ceremony was unbearable, but now, as the reception winds down, he can’t bring himself to leave, as if it gives the whole thing a sense of finality. Arthur meets his eyes, and he thinks- no, he knows- he sees the deep intensity of loss in them. They both know what they’ve missed, but Merlin knows time never would have waited for them. He meets Arthur’s eyes steadily and raises his glass in silent solidarity.
