"Family. Because he was family and she felt he needed her," He spoke quietly. "There was always this innocence about her even though she lived through what she did."
"Cory and I think you are correct. We never spoken before. I would remember if I did." Smiles a little.
She smiles back and nods, "It sounds very inocent, to want to stay with someone who hurts you, either inocent, or massoquist... but you would know her better." Sabine said.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Cory," she holds out her hand for him to shake.
"I think we might not have talked before, but I think I saw you not long ago, you were in a train somewhere in Europe? Sitting by a girl with an I-pod? Can that be?"
"She stayed for other reasons," he shrugged. He took her hand but delicately raised it to his lips and kissed it. "I don't think we have chatted either. But gave pause for a moment, "Yes, she was playing a song... I liked. Was that... how did you know?"
It would not have changed anything, Cory, if you had stayed there with her. She still would have died. The destroyers, the predators, they always find a way, unless you destroy them first. And she would not let you do that. She chose her fate.

I know. I suppose I always knew. it's the way life goes for mortals. It's hard sometimes for Immortals to accept because unlike mortals, we don't forget after a while. We carry the memories for hundreds of years.
People choose their fates, for better for worst. I did not choose to be immortal. But it's what I am and I accept it. Everything that comes with it. Sadly... heartache is a part of it.

*She stubs out the cigarette, lighting another.*
Mortals don't forget, Cory. We never forget. The sounds, smells, taste....some things burn into your memories. You can't forget, not even when you try. We just carry it around for a shorter time. Then we die. We all die. I am always curious if we get to actually forget it then, or if we still carry those things with us, on the roads to hell. *laugh* I hope we get to.
You should not let the heartache go on. You did the right thing for yourself. Being immortal had nothing to do with it. You deserve better. Now you can have it. And, I am happy for you, honest. I am.

I have more than a life time of memories to take with me to hell. I don't know if I did the right thing. I will always question that. Just like with you.
I've made bad choices. I deserve all that I get and then some from them. But you know the funny thing... I don't care. Because I know either way, I'm going to be roasting in a fire with little guys stabbing me with pitchforks to see if I'm done.
