They don't even know what a real Socialist is. They just say that because they think it sounds scary and bad.

And in a few years it will be something else. It was Communist when I was a tiny little thing. Liberal had a long, long run. Terrorist was popular. Now it is Socialism. They are hiding in the closet.

I was on Second Life chatting to a resident of a sim I am becoming involved in creating. She is a 40 year old American. She referred to your healthcare system and that you will soon go the way of Canada and become 'socialist'. I tried to explain what the word actually means and also said that I was a socialist. She wouldn't engage the conversation any further. Strange that she has internet access and is incapable of learning for herself what something actually is.

The thing is, Americans see and hear gross mischaracterisations of the Canadian system from just about every source across the full width (ahem) of their news media, and that's after they go through American schools where it is taught that Socialism and Communism are one and the same, a rickety, thoughtless political system that's never worked anywhere it's ever been tried. Fact is, Canada hasn't got socialised medicine. We've got public health insurance, full stop. That's it. But that didn't stop the nitwit distant-relative gynæcologist I was sitting with at my cousin's wedding in New York laughing when she learnt I live in Toronto and saying "Haw haw haw, Canada's a great place unless you get sick, haw haw." I asked her what experience had led her to that conclusion, and she said she'd never been to Canada. "But all the AMA research clearly shows…". Uh-huh. She'd made up her mind based on propaganda by an industry association with a deeply, expensively vested interest in maintaining the American status quo. And, like your sim-friend ( ... )

I was watching a documentary the other day filmed during the recent Bush Reign Of Terror. Most of the interviews were from common folks in the parts of our country that supported the filthy lying mass murderer (the parts that were home to the poor, the unemployed and the undereducated for the most part). When asked if there was anything they would like to see, but the Bush supporters and the Bush haters named "HEALTHCARE!" It was what everyone wanted ( ... )
