So, since my teacher told me in a written mid-semester review that unless I get drastically better, I should reconsider my choice in careers, I'm kind of going through a bit of a crisis. (His exact quote was, "If this is your best effort, you should reconsider your career choice ( Read more... )

At the risk of sounding uncaring in the midst of your crisis:

"Have you considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts."

Can I change the name? I think "Dread Pirate Fluffykins" would be equally frightening.

I believe their standards are a helluva lot higher since it's specifically a design/art school. At least with the U, it's fairly lenient since we're not really known for design.
As for doing Photography over there, that's something to consider.

Let me ask YOU a question:

What do YOU want to do? is this it?

If you are doing what you want, and you're happy, DO IT.

As long as you're putting in your best effort - screw them. There are lots and lots of people who've been told 'Oh, you shouldn't do this', and they've gone on to acclaim and honours and lots of happiness.

Take their criticism for what it is - constructive criticism. See if you can improve your processes or think outside the box a bit. BUT, and I do say BUT - go after what you want, WHATEVER that is, and damn anyone who tells you different.

Part of what made me take this SO horribly was that I've already been questioning my skills and whether or not I want to do this. I was a theater major before and transferred to Graphic Design because I thought I was at least decent at it (and could improve through classes) and I figured a GD degree would do more for me than Theater.
Lately, I haven't been able to decide if I really want to do this, which is why I'm contemplating transferring. If I knew flat out, "Yes, I still want to do this post-graduation." I'd probably be a lot more inclined to tell him to fuck off. But because I've been sitting in limbo, it's kind of like a shove into the "Stop trying." land.

Well, to an extent. If I stay in Minnesota, I get resident rates making it cheaper. If I leave Minnesota, I have to struggle to keep up with rent/tuition on my own, which is hard since my job kind of limits my living options (in the way that it doesn't pay well).
If I was going to leave the state, I'd prefer to go to Missouri since at least then I can be with The Boy.

Well I work at the Art Institute downtown. They have a fairly new but excellent photography school. Let me know if you would like some information sent your way (I just happen to work with admissions)
