as was already said, the e-brake light is connected to the pedal, asuming you have a pedal, or the hand mechenism. On the other hand. if the emergency brakes didn't release that could account for the grinding noise. E-brakes will let back up easy and drag going forward. sometimes backing up and jamming on the brakes will break them free. Has it been cold? they can freeze in the winter, shouldn't be used then.

If the brakes are ok, the Transmission may have been slipping. sometimes this can be fixed by "tightening the bands" heh what ever that means, they do it.

either way get it checked out before it gets worse.
