So I'm graduating in August. If I had known what majors and minors I was going to end up with when I started, then I could have graduated in May '06, if not Dec '05, but at this point I don't regret spending the extra year in school. As far as grad schools go (and if you're thinking about biochem, I'm guessing you're interested in science), what I've learned is that they placed a huge emphasis on some type of research experience. Even high-school students are encouraged to start volunteering at labs. They way I see it, is a good way to get started, get your name in a publication, and a recommendation letter from the professor in charge of the lab. In my building, there are people working with monkeys, tree shrews, rats/mice, and some other animals. There are two molecular biology labs (I'm in one of them, by accident or maybe fate, only time will tell). Anyway, this is just one building, I'm sure you can find something else in UAB. If you have time, this is a good way to impress grad schools. About extracurricular activities, I'm as clueless as ever ( ... )
