Supernatural 4x18: Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink!

This episode was so meta! I thought the scene about slash was hilarious. Maybe one of the funniest scenes yet. A bit uncomfortable too though, I guess, because I know there are probably lots of people who watch the show and aren't involved in fandom at all who won't have any idea what that was about. Like, my mom sometimes watches with me, and if I had to explain what was so funny to a woman who has trouble operating a phone, let alone a computer...well, that would be awkward. So I can see how some people might think it hits a little too close or are offended by how they portrayed fans, but I'm not. I know there are going to be people bitching and I just had to say that. Come on, it's Kripke. He loves to tease the fangirls. It's all in good fun.

That said, apparently, this "simpatico" person was a real poster on Television Without Pity who got banned for badmouthing the show too much. So by all means, make fun of her, because a lot of the people on TWOP are admittedly batshit crazy. These are the people who started that whole "OMG Sam is a necrophilac!" fiasco, after all. So it sort of bothers me that the writers seem to think we're all like that. Obviously that site only represents a small yet very vocal part of fandom, so it's a bit of and embarrassment to fandom as a whole when people act like that. But elsewhere, I find people's opinions are generally fair and balanced, and I just wish the writers could see that. (And if they aren't, I don't want to know about it. I like my little bubble, thanks.)

This is sort of hard to explain, but you know how at the end of some shows it will say something like "Any similarities to people living or dead is entirely coincidental so please don't sue us"? Well, it's something I've wondered before and this episode has brought it up again: what if there really is a Sam and Dean out there? Not so much with the demon blood and going to hell, but season one Sam and Dean, who start out as just two guys driving around, looking for their dad and saving people. I think it's entirely possible, and I find the idea oddly comforting.

Did you guys recognize the guy playing Chuck? That's Rob Benedict, who played Richard on Felicity! Good to see him. I don't think we've seen the last of Chuck. But what is it with all these characters named Chuck lately? Is there something in L.A.'s water?

Love that the books were in the bargain bin, and the romance novel covers that made them look like Fabio. Plus they were full frontal! Ha, if only...

The tattoos return! I don't even care for tattoos, so why is that so hot?

Doing laundry! Brooding and pensive shoulders!

I'm glad they made Lilith into an adult, because yeah, that would be creepy if Sam was going at it with a little girl. I totally expected it to be Ruby showing up and turning into Lilith there for a second, though. Good thing that didn't happen.

Dean reads Vonnegut? What?

I had to smirk at Sam balking to stay in that crappy motel. Please, as if it's any worse than where they normally stay.

Poor car, beat up again. How are they going to fix her this time?

Sneaky Castiel! "I can't help you, but if you want to do this, I'll look the other way..."

I find the idea of fate they're raising here to be intriguing. You can zig when you're supposed to zag, but that doesn't mean anything is going to turn out differently. Suppose Sam is fated to turn evil. That means everything Dean and John have done to try to save him was all for nothing. I'm not sure I like it. Everyone wants to think we have free will, but do we really? How do you fight fate? I guess that is the big question. But Dean will find a way to save Sam. He has to. ...Right?
