I'm not suprised this story isn't so popular. It's wonderfully well written and moving, but to me in many ways it is a tragedy. Not so much for 'poor Harry' being forgotten (although that hurts too) but because, as Hermione says just before her memories go away forever, she's giving up a part of herself for reasons that are, at best, rash and not well considered.
Even though you hold out hope for the two of them and for ultimate happiness in the epilogue, what is gone can never be recovered. In a way Hermione has turned herself into a different person and killed off her original self. So much good was lost with the bad - I think anyone who reads this story will wonder if it was really worth it, especially since Hermione is now living with the consequences of a decision she not only regrets making but has been deprived the right of owning that regret.
I am so sorry, I'm afraid I didn't see this comment until now!
I definitely understand where you're coming from, even though pivotal experiences were "recreated" to a certain extent to mold her (as close as possible) to the person she would be with Harry, it is doubtful you can wholly recapture that person. What I do think, however, the heart of the matter is is that even with all of that, even with all of the trials and tribulations, the mistakes made (on both parts), they can't seem to stay away. they're still drawn to one another. I personally imagine that even with everything, they'll find that relationship they once had, but it's definitely very open ended in regards to the 1000's of ways they can reach that point with total (or not) honesty.
