Character: Arisato Minato
Series/Fandom: Persona 3
Original or Template version: Original
Age: Seventeen
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: It's implied very strongly that Minato loves … humanity, as a whole, and wants to seek a way for them to live on and find a comfortable life where they can seek the Answer. This "Answer," of course, is death in the context of Persona 3. However, whether this love is more platonic or otherwise is up to interpretation, but with the potentiality of it moving elsewhere if that was what someone wanted.
And most of all, Minato is what everyone wants him to be. Throughout the course of the Journey, many girls seek him for comfort in the way of relationships, and the end of his social links tend to imply a sexual circumstance. Therefore, some aspect of him must be heterosexual. But there's also the implication of pansexuality with how willingly he gives up himself for the World-his relationships with the entirety of the world leads him to his decision. He's what people need him to be-he's someone who helps others face death but not completely understand it. He seals off the fears of death, and this is strongly tied to how he approaches others and is sexual in any way.
Overall, though, Minato is someone who leans toward heterosexuality by default-with that little bone thrown in that there could possibly be more. His approach to others is being what they need, as he really is the prime example of the Jack of All Trades. This doesn't mean his natural inclination is to find both girls and guys attractive on a regular basis (his tendency is obviously toward girls), but there is the loose probability there.

He's of an average height, not towering over any guys, but standing at about the same height as most girls. His way of carrying himself is standing straight up, but he tilts his head forward while keeping his hand in his pocket. In a way, he keeps his body very scrunched up together, as if he has his personal bubble, and invading it might be a little difficult. His clothing tends to be his school uniform or stylish clothing on the weekends, implying that he has enough taste. He wears headphones and a tubular MP3 player around his neck, and often times, he's found with the headphones on his ears, as if he's blocking out the world.
The rest of Minato's characteristics make him seem to be closed-off, but fairly laid back in how he tends to approach life. He looks particularly serious most of the time, rarely smiling but never grimacing, giving the indication that he's not displeased with a situation. When he does smile, the smiles come off as gentle and sincere.
Personality: To fully understand Minato, it is first necessary to understand the Journey he undertakes. At the beginning of Minato's Journey, he is someone closed off from the world. When he meets Pharos at the beginning of his story, he is told that he has one year, and at the end of that year, he gains the power of the World. Through this Journey, he eventually creates bonds that are cemented and he learns about the bonds of others while seeing his own Answer (this answer, as it turns out, is the fact that everyone must embrace death in some way, and he must be willing to do it easily; it's the answer that many aren't willing to face just yet, and the fear of death eventually leads Minato to sacrificing himself so the world does not need to face its inevitability just yet).
That said, his sacrificial nature is not the front and center part of his personality. Minato is someone who tends to seem to be the type to coast through life. Prior to reaching Iwatodai, it seems as if he did just that-closing off others, making it just as he could to get by, and when he reached that place, he continued to do that, but built up relationships and learned about others. The thing about Minato is that he is an every man-serious, but capable of listening and telling someone what they want to hear. It's not superficial in any way, as he does go out of his way to build upon these relationships. He's sensitive, understanding, but also someone who takes a lot onto his plate. To some degree, he realizes these relationships will protect his friends, as getting to know and understand the people around him helps give him strength to fight with the SEES, but as time passes, he learns to understand the world as a whole much better. His biggest flaw, however, is that he just has a year to reach out to these people, and in some ways, it seems as if one year isn't enough as he manages his time to become charming, brave, and smart enough to embrace these different people in his life (and on the internet, in one circumstance).
The thing that almost everyone notices about Minato is his serious nature. He is serious, but understanding-learning as he goes how to handle his multiple relationships. In some senses, he is what someone might label as playing others with how he juggles the numerous relationships in his life, but he does it with such ease and care, ensuring that everyone has their specific time with him so they can unload their problems. After all, the most important thing about Minato is the fact that he wants to listen and make life easier for others-he doesn't unload his problems on others because he doesn't want to burden them, but he is willing enough to take them upon himself. Sometimes this unloading does lead to romantic entanglements, and in these relationships, Minato maintains a passive role-listening, saying what's necessary, and carrying through as someone desires.
But looking at his relationship with those closest to him shows the full scale of his personality. While passive in daily interactions, his circumstances with the SEES as they seek to save the world reveal a firmer personality. Though he does not come off as someone overly blunt, he is very straight forward in how he leads and how he fights, moving from one circumstance to the next without hesitation. Minato continues as an every man, doing what's necessary to keep the others alive, and changing from weapons and personae as time passes. His interaction with them is genuine, and though he doesn't appear to express it much, he seems happy with the group. As happy as one can be with some of the antics he's dragged in to-but Minato continues and goes along with them willingly, making it clear that the friendships he has are significant to him. These are the people he wants to protect, and though the relationships are sometimes strained, he does anything he can to help the others, learning from them and understanding them along the way. He's firm with them, not cutting corners even with them, but also maintaining his serious, understanding role. His charisma is not through fallacies, but his genuine approach to the others. He may not speak much, but the idea of walking tall really does resonate with him. He will clearly do anything for the others.
His relationships with the SEES make it easier for him to branch out to others. They are the starting point of his development to connect to the world as a whole. They are the starting point of his need to protect and his willingness to do so. Though he may seem solemn, quiet, and withdrawn, that is hardly the case as time passes and he creates those significant bonds. To the outsider, his nature may be difficult to understand-though he has moments of typical teenager behavior, he's mature beyond his years. His willingness to juggle so much in his life is to be admired and scolded, as in many ways, it's interesting but entirely too much. After all, he'll do a little bit of everything to continue through his Journey-and in a way, this is an even better example of his thorough, but straight-forward method of dealing with life. He may have coasted through life originally, closed off from even the most unusual of circumstances (such as others turning into coffins at the strike of midnight), but he changes according to his original behavior, reaching out his arms until he realizes what he must do: understand his Answer so others don't have to fear their own.
Abilities/Strengths: Minato is, as has been mentioned before, an every man. He's good at most sports, arts, and is capable of speaking to most people in a charismatic fashion (though he's far from perfect). His ability with weapons is astounding. He's good with one-handed weapons (rapiers and so forth), broad swords, lances, archery, and axes. On top of that, he has a collection of personae, ranging from not very powerful to excessively so-ones that can even do one-hit kills at the cost of his ability to cast any other spells. To say Minato is powerful is a bit of an understatement; however, he's hardly the type of person to show off his abilities.
Weaknesses: Minato stretches himself too thin, making his daily interactions seem superficial. He doesn't tell others about himself, making his actions speak for himself most of the time. Truthfully, though he does so much for others and is understanding, it's hard to understand him-and he likes it that way. His willingness to be private while still self-sacrificing is undoubtedly frustrating. There are others around him, too, that want to help, after all. These facts actually led to a lot of dissent between his friends as they struggled to interpret why he would let himself die so they could live on.
History: In some ways, Minato's life could have started normally-he had a mother, a father, and he was an only child. However, when he was ten-years-old, his life changed. His mother and father were in a car accident, and that night, Aigis, a robot designed to kill creatures known as Shadows, sealed the avatar for Death away-and it was sealed away inside of Minato. This circumstance left Minato as an orphan, and inside of him, he had Death itself-that which everyone fears, dreads, and the Answer that everyone wishes to turn away from.
From there on, his life was inevitably leading to the day when he would walk through Iwatodai and end up at the dormitory for SEES. Minato withdrew from others and coasted through life, not telling anyone about his problems and rarely making it a big deal. When he walked through Iwatodai for that first time as the Dark Hour, a phenomenon that occurred every night at midnight, passed, Minato was unfazed by the fact that those unable to experience this hour were turned into coffins, as if it was an unusual happenstance around him to just pass through. When he finally arrived at the dormitory, he met Pharos, a sort of guide in his Journey (and later revealed to be the Death residing within him, unconsciously guiding him to find his other pieces so he could obtain his own form once more), and he signed a contract for a year. This year was all he had until the end would come-and Minato would have to be ready.
Not long after signing the contract, a Shadow (something that was also a reflection of the soul in some way) attacked the dormitory and Minato brought an invoker, similar to a gun, to his head and brought out his persona, Orpheus. He first met Igor and first started his real year-long Journey. From there, everything changed. Not long after, Minato was asked to join the SEES-an extracurricular group that worked during the aforementioned Dark Hours to eradicate Shadows and explore the unusual green tower, Tartarus, that sprouted out of their school (Gekkoukan High) at night. Minato initially just led a small group (comprised of same-class juniors Takeba Yukari and Iori Junpei) through the school, but as time passed, others (Mitsuru, Akihiko, Fuuka, Aigis, Ken, Koromaru, and Shinjiro) joined the band of individuals who fought against the Shadows. During these adventures, they were forced to face powerful Shadows at least once a month, while these powerful Shadows affected the city with apathy syndrome.
While Minato fought hard at night, he pushed through school with ease. He obtained good grades and admiration from his peers. He fought to remain strong but still spent time with his new connections after school, realizing that these connections flowed into the sea of his soul to make powerful personae (of which he had access to many). He managed to do well in a number of ways, remarkably, while dealing with the day-to-day life circumstances with the SEES. Yukari's crush on him, Mitsuru's respect for him, Akihiko's longing to fight-and other circumstances all revolved around him and affected him in some way. He came to grow close with the SEES, even as they went through numerous trials. And at night, Minato found himself visited by a boy named Pharos, who spoke to him in a curious fashion and gave him warnings about what was to come.
The SEES had to deal with numerous uncomfortable revelations. They learned about Mitsuru's family's involvement in the exploration and creation of Shadows. They learned about how Yukari's father died. They met Amada Ken and brought him into the SEES, only to learn, not long after, that he only sought revenge on reluctant returning member, Aragaki Shinjiro. And surrounding these situations, they met a group named Strega, which wished to continue the existence of the Dark Hour and keep SEES from destroying all the Shadows. They also wished to hurt the SEES themselves, and Takaya, the leader, succeeded in killing Shinjiro when Ken wished to do it himself (Shinjiro, as it turns out, was already dying).
From then forth, a string of slow revelations formed, only to be somewhat halted by the revelation that the Chairman of the SEES, Ikutsuki, was actually using the SEES to kill all the Shadows so Nyx would be freed and the Fall (the Death of everyone) would happen. He sought to kill the SEES as a sacrifice, but it failed to happen, and the SEES lived on for another day. Unfortunately, Mitsuru lost her father at this, and was devastated. It was then that Mochizuki Ryoji entered the lives of Minato, Junpei, and the others in his own way. At first, his involvement was unusual, but he wasn't a bad person-genuine, involved, and there was no way for any of them to know his true intentions. But as time passed and more of them reached their personal revelations-Mitsuru reached hers with the help of Yukari, and Junpei, unfortunately, could only reach his when his girlfriend, Chidori, a member of Strega, died. But they managed in their own ways, until December happened and Ryoji's true identity was revealed as the Nyx avatar that lived inside of Minato all that time. He said he would give them until New Years Eve to decide if they wished to fight Nyx or accept the coming of the Fall. The SEES spent the month training and preparing for that, and at the end, Minato told Ryoji-who was so deeply connected to him, who hadn't spoken to him in so long, who had unintentionally misguided him in his Journey-that they did not wish to welcome the Fall, the moment where everyone would die. Ryoji was displeased with this, but he accepted this and vanished. The SEES welcomed in the New Year.
Minato and the rest of the SEES continued to climb through Tartarus, seeking reports and feeling the weight of Judgment upon their shoulders. Eventually, they reached the top, and at that moment, they knew the end would be coming soon. They continued to train, dreading that day, and during this time, Minato slowly reached his resolve. He trained but met others, strengthening himself and the SEES for that day. When it finally arrived, they faced it head on, but the world was already experiencing some extent of chaos. Strega sought to make the world welcome the Fall, welcome Death, and the SEES continued to fight against that.
Finally, they fought Nyx, and after an extensive battle, where Minato and the others had to face his entire Journey at once, the end was coming. It seemed as if there was no way, but Minato once again found himself in the room with Igor from the first time he awakened his persona (and many times after, as he sought quests, to create new personae, and register the ones he currently had so he could bring them back into his soul). There, Igor revealed his surprise at Minato being able to obtain the one true card-the World card. This card represented many things, but it also represented the fact that Minato found the Answer, which many others sought. Minato knew what he had to do-he had to sacrifice himself, just so the others could live on. It turns out that he wasn't only sealing away Death, and not even permanently managing that, but also sealing away the monstrous creature created from everyone fearing and dreading Death so it would not come and destroy everyone. He knew he needed to do that.
For some months after, Minato and the others lived without their memories of the Dark Hour and of being SEES. Aigis reawakened those memories inside of Minato, and in his final moments, he rested his head on her lap and went to sleep. This sleep was actually a coma that Minato would never wake up from-it was the time in which he fully embraced his Answer, seeing the SEES step onto the next walk of life.
As it turns out, though, he wakes up: in the city of Template.
