What You Missed
At 5:12 this morning
a rust bucket of a truck
drove down to the sad patch of beach
by Town Landing and the docks,
parked by the sea and watched.
At 5:15 the sun failed to rise above the clouds
but still managed to press orange patches
into the blue of the waves.
At 5:17 two seagulls fought over a dead crab
each holding a jeweled leg
flapping their wings and screeching.
At 5:30 a light came on in one of the houses
as at 5:29 the streetlamps went out.
At 5:36 hermit crabs ran with the tide
frantic in their repo houses.
At 5:44 I was smiling
as they ran across my feet.
At 5:47 the cold burn of the pavement
ground the calluses off my feet
and pounded into my calves and knees.
At 5:55 a Siamese cat
shamelessly inserted its entire head
into the small opening
of a green watering can.
At 5:58 an orange dog panted in the heat
and I ran home barefoot
sandy shoes in my hand.
