A Welcome back, Jack message is written on the wall of his coffee house - because what would Jack’s be without a cryptic message scrawled on his wall in blood red?

If honey's what you covet,
You'll find that I love it,
Because I'll guzzle
Up the thing you prize!

The city's going downhill,
So I'll give it a thrill
And I'll take any gift of love

Principal Clark called me this morning. He was sorry he hadn't called earlier, but apparently he needs someone to fill in for social studies and philosophy. At least for today, but maybe longer. I can manage that. Maybe I can introduce the philosophy students to Jack Kerouac and the rest of the Beats. Hope they aren't stuck in ancient Greece or Rome, learning Zeno's paradoxes and Pythagorus's theories. All them guys in robes talked a lot about life and how it works. The Beats lived it. I dropped off Ms. Clothilde's feathers. She asked about sinew. I have a dozen pieces, cleaned and dried, one of which is also already pounded. I always meant to experiment with it, but the pounding was a lot of work, and I just never got around to using it when I had finished the pounding. I offer her that and the eleven unpounded pieces for twenty-five dollars. If I change my mind about trying to work with it, there's more where that came from.

When I came back, the lights were on throughout the shop. On the seat of the chair where I've been spending my evenings was a piece of paper. You believe you're safe
With nothing you love,
But I've found something you value
Like a cold hand a glove.

Say goodbye to your Map of Denice.
I lean over to read it, but I have the presence of mind not to touch it. I go back outside and take out my 'phone. No signal. I manage to get a signal by standing up in the bed of the truck, on top of the tool box ( ... )
