I find Robin Hobb makes me irritated if I read too much - all her heroes are so self-pitying that the book ends up a total "pity party" as the Americans call it: "Poor me, why did this dreadful thing happen to me; what did I do to deserve it?" Even FitzChivalry only admits to being "content" at the very end when he has everything he needs....
I agree about Fitz in his second trilogy particularly (though of course we are eventually given a reason for it), but I don't get that from most of the rest of them; at times, maybe, but not as a rule. I enjoy the way people like Malta have to learn not to be so self-pitying.
