I'm afraid this didn't just stick its toe in melancholy, but instead waded right in and went for depressing. I'm also afraid that this isn't going to make any sense to anyone who isn't in my head. that was tragically beautiful like a cut orchid. lovely, but somehow painful. i'm glad you wrote it though.

I spent a year teaching English in Taiwan. I spent some time driving across the island on my motorcycle. I will never forget seeing the gorgeous wild orchids growing on the sides of trees. So the image of a cut orchid works really well for me.
