Aghast

I was watching Top Design last night, and the challenge was for the contestants to create window dressing for 5 past Project Runway designers. Jeffrey Sibella instructed his team that the feeling for his creation was very Blade Runner. And neither contestant understood - one thought he meant Blades of Glory (*cringe*), the other didn't even have ( Read more... )

Yeah, that was fairly horrible. How can you strive to be an interior designer, and not know what Blade Runner is?

I think what was even sadder was that, once their client mentioned a source of inspiration they weren't familiar with, they didn't bother finding out. I don't know if they're prohibited from consulting the intarwebs or not, but you'd think with a little discussion with the client they would have seized on something other than "kaleidescope." Maybe a tiny portion of the blame lies with Jeffrey for not explaining in more detail - maybe key descriptors "gritty," "film noir meets sci-fi," and "see, there's this chick, she thinks she's human but she's actually a robot, in this dark futuristic dystopia..." But he chose to say "kaleidescope," and his silly little designers said "wheeeeee, sparkly!" And apparently, "Rococo."

"I don't know if they're prohibited from consulting the intarwebs or not,"

If it's anything like Project Runway, then they are prohibited from using any outside sources.

That's kind of what I was assuming, though I'm not sure what they consider "outside sources." I'd always assumed that on PR pattern-making/design books were verboten, but some sort of generalized art book might not be... but I have no clue, maybe anything that could serve as any source of inspiration is out. Regardless... what a shame they butchered poor Jeffrey's Rachel-esque vision!

Did they get kicked off for it?

One of them. Sadly, the Rococo-obsessed one survived.

What was weird to me is that they are both old enough to have seen Blade Runner, or at least lived through the 1980s punk thing. Granted, it's kind of a cult flick and neither of them are the goth-punk-apocolypse type, but c'mon.

Yeah... I have a hard time even considering it a cult film, but that's probably a product of my environment!

Holden: Describe in single words only the good things that come into your mind about... Blade Runner.
Leon: Blade Runner?
Holden: Yeah.
Leon: Let me tell you about Blade Runner. (Shoots Holden.)
