Yeah, Israel has, for a long time, just been the McGuffian du jour. It's all about personal power. Very little actually about religion. The Koran is just a cloak they wrap themselves in.

Israel is the bogeyman that many of the Arab states use to justify their internal repression. "You could have freedom. Except for Israel."

It's been fed to them long enough that it sees wide recognition.
