It can be very embarrassing to have compliments paid to you in front of others. Makes you the center of attention, which can be a nice feeling sometimes, but it is also a rather threatening position to be in. Try not to let it get to you. You deserve the compliments you are given. :)
I hate having teachers who don't know what they're talking about. It makes me want to scream.
