Oh my God, this is amazing! I've never heard the song before, and it fits eerily well. I loved the interlude of sweet Sam & Dean moments right before the Gadreel section. It really highlights the betrayal.
LOL, I haven't listened to the radio in a couple of years, since I moved to a city without an independent station. I didn't hear "Get Lucky" until it was on the Colbert Report. My music collection is a mixture of unapologetically dorky, classic rock, and indie hipster nonsense. But I was clothes shopping yesterday and "Radioactive" was piped into the dressing room, so I totally believe you that it's everywhere.
It's so daunting watching all the things Sam has gone through. Excellent vid.
Don't forget Azazel poisoning him at 6 months. ):
For me it really highlights the differences between the different *kinds* of traumas Sam goes through vs what happens to Dean. Sam is physically so powerful and intellectual so sharp, and the possessions strip him of that power. I was recently theorizing how Sam is treated as a vessel, over and over, and how as Cesperanza mentions above, it has the effect of putting him in the "feminized" position, patriarchally speaking. Whereas Dean is treated more as a blade, to be honed and wielded in whatever war he is currently embroiled in.
One of my top favorite songs, deployed beautifully. Excellent work.
Yes, I actually had to pare down my list of Sam traumas to fit in the song, heh. I really wanted baby demon blood Sam and Swap Meat Sam, but I just couldn't fit them all in...
I like your thoughts on vessel/blade very much; they seem very true.
Wow. This song is stupidly addictive, and along with other Imagine Dragons remind me intensely of SPN- so thank you for using the song! The vid is truly stunning. You get the message across so incredibly well; this for me is what S9 should have been about, considering that Sam's history with possession is so deeply personal and there's been so much of pushing him around like a pawn on a chessboard. For unfathomable reasons, the Gadreel parts and the scenes from Free to Be You and Me really affected me. Brilliant job!
