I'm in the home stretch on my quilted petticoat, and I only need to pleat this thing to waist ties. Except that I'm now completely unsure what kind of pleats to use ( Read more... )

18th century? You see almost exclusively knife pleats then, IIRC.

See, I looked in my copy of Eighteenth Century Clothing at Williamsburg, and they have an example that looks like it's been cartridge pleated. Admittedly, it doesn't have it's original waistband, and is probably altered.

Anywho, I'm thinking I need to let it sit a little bit so I can get into a better headspace. I'm feeling cranky about how the garment looks regardless of which type of pleat I use...dang short torso.

Oh man, I hear ya on the short torso thing.

I took a look at Bradfield/Costume in Detail and it looks like there are directional knife pleats on a whole page of quilted pettis. Giving it a rest sounds like a good idea though...hope it looks better in the morning for you. :)
