I've been on a bit of a friending spree in the last week. Hello new people! I thought that putting together a post about me would help give a bit of context to my journal for people who I've only just met. People who know me in real life and long time readers, you can probably skip this one, unless you want to read it in which case go ahead ( Read more... )

Cute kitty! :)

We have a dog that is scared of so may things. It's funny because he's a 180lb Saint Bernard. There is very little that could hurt that dog and he's scared of everything, haha.

Thank you for this intro entry. :) You seem like a really interesting person! I've sometimes thought about joining the SCA but I'm always so busy and wouldn't know where to start. Archery is so much fun, isn't it? I've slacked off on taking classes but I love it too. That's a lovely photo of you in blue with your harp!

Can I ask a bit more about your dissertation? That's a great topic, how did you choose it? Did you focus on any particular books? I'm not really familiar with Australian sf/f but I'm curious to know.

It's very mature of you to know what you want and make plans for it, even if it means sacrifice. I don't think it's weird at all that you're staying together until you have all your ducks in a row -- whatever works, works. You only live once! I want to travel a lot more too.

Do give the SCA a try, it's heaps of fun! The first step is figuring out where your local groups are, and what events they have coming up. If you wanted to meet people before going to an actual event, then find out when they have training (which in most places tends to not just be fighters doing fighty things but also everybody hanging out and socialising); otherwise, just book for an event and go check it out :) I've been pretty slack with archery lately. I haven't practised in months, and I need to put new points on my arrows. I got as far as taking the old ones off and sanding the old glue away, but now they're just sitting there next to the glue looking all forlorn and accusing ( ... )

I've been so slack with archery too -- it's been months since I even strung my bow! I feel guilty just thinking about it. This Spring I'm going to try to get back to it because I really do love it ( ... )

SCA can be a big commitment- it'll swallow your whole life if you want it to- but it doesn't have to be that way. I used to eat breathe and sleep SCA, going out to training, music group, singing, dancing and scribes night most weeks as well as actual events. I burned out and also wanted to see non-SCA friends more, and these days I only go to a handful of events every year and attend training and scribes night maybe once a month. I still love it, but I really did overcommit before! As for clothing, if you can sew then you can make your own, but there's no shame in buying something or bartering your skills with somebody who's good at dressmaking. There's a good culture of helping others and sharing skills and knowledge in most SCA groups, and more experienced members often help newbies make some basic garb. I love making my medieval dresses, but not everybody in the SCA enjoys sewing as much as I do ( ... )
