The Doctor Who Christmas special was a little underwhelming. Catherine Tate is shrill and annoying. It all just felt like a rerun.

Okay, Catherine Tate generally is horrible. However, I appreciated her in the special because she was basically playing the shrill, horrible character she normally does on her sketch show, but when she gets ripped into by her would-be fiancee, i felt bad for her. It was a genuinely cruel moment.

I also liked the Christmas star firing into London, I liked how they emphazised the sheer insanity of the Doctor, and how scary it all is without a companion like Rose (or even with one, to be honest). I like how they're continuing to paint him as a genuinely good, but sometimes sadistic and completely distant hero. I also got choked up whenever they mentioned Rose. I miss Billie Piper.

There is a great effort to paint heroes in a perspective, and how one could get lost in one's own little world.

Plus, when you spend an entire Christmas day without seeing a single soul, the good Doctor is the best medicine.

I agree with what you said but the episode felt like they were going by a blueprint. I guess with last year's Christmas special actually being special with the reveal of the new Doctor and such it was a bit bigger or something. When does the proper 3rd series start?
