The Children of Hurin

I read it last week. Most of it.

I did not like it.

I have seen good reviews of it and I can't argue with them. I think it was well crafted; I was not disappointed in the way the story was told.

Mild spoilers follow.   ( Read more... )

I have never been fond of posthumous Tolkien - as far as I am concerned, that's graverobbing. Including Silmarillion.

Was there indication that he didn't want any of that published? If he was trying to give the British their own mythology, it is a lot more effective if it gets published. But different people have different opinions about that.

I very much enjoy Laurie King's Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series. There have been many Holmes stories, although they used different names until the copyright ran out. I can't imagine the "real" one running around with a woman 40 or more years his junior.

I'd have to agree. That also goes for Other Author Complete Dead Author's Notes - fiction. Has that activity ever produced anything good?

That's what I was referring to. People writing their own stories based of old characters I can understand (but usually I do not read any of it). But posthumous Tolkien or P.K.Dick or whatever based on (supposed?) notes left behind - no thank you.
