you shouldn't stay in memphis. it's sounds like it's bad for your self-esteem. making a fresh start somewhere will rejuvenate you and help you refocus your priorities. and of course, it's always nice to be able to walk down the street without cringing.
I had the same feeling about oxford when i lived there; I really wanted to go but there were a few things that made me desperately want to stay. but leaving it was one of the best things I ever did. sometimes you just outgrow places, and then the only sane thing to do is slough it off like an old snakeskin and hightail it out of town.
plus, california beats memphis hands down everytime. even if you are going to l.a. (why are you going to l.a. again? you should go to s.f. or napa instead. yeah!)
