see here [Background] Before being thrust into an involved heroic plot, Link was a cowboy. He lived in a small quiet village, herding blue goats with his horse, Epona. But then the kids in the village were kidnapped by monsters. Link went down the path only to come across a weird black wall blocking his way. As he got close, a large monster hand grabbed him and pulled him in. The twilit dimension had covered that area, and no one from the world of light can exist in it... people are usually turned into spirits or monsters, but the Triforce of Courage residing in Link's hand protected him and caused him to be transformed into a Sacred Wolf instead.
Link woke up in a prison cell, and was rescued by an imp named Midna who told him she decided he'd be her servant. Together they visited Zelda. Then, Link and Midna went on a quest to save the Light Spirits who could repel the twilight from the land and collect the Fused Shadows for Midna (which had the power of Midna's ancestors) before Zant could. Once they collect all the Fused Shadows, Zant appeared, nearly kills Midna with the light of one of the light spirits, and curses Link into a permanent wolf state. Link brought Midna to Zelda, who sacrificed herself to save Midna (and from that point on sunlight no longer repelled Midna). Link and Midna journeyed to the Sacred Grove and Link's curse was removed by the Master Sword lying there. Midna keeps the "curse" on hand so that she could give and remove it from Link at will, making his wolf form completely optional from that point on.
And, of course, he saved all the children... but nobody cares about them.
And from then their mission was to retrieve the broken pieces of the Twilight Mirror so they could use it as a portal to get into the actual Twilight Realm and stop Zant. But it turns out Zant was only being used by Ganondorf, who had Zelda herself and Hyrule Castle hostage...
[Personality] Link doesn't talk. Sometimes he'll yell or gasp but no words ever come out, though he expresses himself fairly well with emotions. He is caring and polite and will risk his life for not just his friends but even for people he's barely met. He doesn't possess the Triforce of Courage for nothing.
[Specialties/Abilities] With a certain Shadow Crystal curse thingy, Midna can turn him into a wolf.
Human: Link is experienced with a variety of weapons and items. He has the Master Sword (a sword which does good damage against evil beings and glows in twilight), a Hylian shield, a bow and arrows (with a hawkeye mask he can use to snipe faraway targets), three kinds of bombs (regular, underwater, and walking) that he can attach to arrows for exploding projectiles, double clawshots for climbing, the Gale Boomerang (it has the spirit of a wind fairy and causes gusts), ball and chain (FOR SMASHING!!!1), a slingshot which he'll never use because bows are cooler, bottles for stuffing things into, the totally useless Dominion Rod, some Iron Boots in case he feels like drowning himself, a Zora suit so he can manage to avoid drowning, Magic Armor which makes Link have to choose between invincibility and being poor since it eats rupees, a spinner so he can.... ride on a giant top, a fishing pole FOR FISHING (and distracting Ganondorf hurr hurr), and a lantern for LIGHTING DARK PLACES AND BURNING SHIT.
He's also good at herding/wrestling goats, sumo wrestling, rescuing princesses, losing children, riding horses, falconeering, making music with grass, playing fetch with cute puppies, smashing pumpkins, breaking pottery, inviting himself into peoples' homes without being yelled at, doing seemingly pointless errands with eventual rewards, snowboarding, solving large block puzzles, finding keys, abusing chickens, flying with chickens, landing big ones, catching bugs, killing monsters, and collecting delicious heart pieces.
Wolf: As a wolf he can do wolf-things like running fast and jumping nimbly and digging and biting jugulars, but he has a few specific abilities. For one, his senses. With his amazing nose and sacred-wolf-senses he can track scents and figure out where things are buried, and he can also see ghosts and spirits.
Also, though he himself can't say anything, animals can talk to him in wolf form. He can understand animal speak the same way people understand each other. So even a simple cat or dog can give him a speech that he can understand as if spoken in plain English. Not only that, but animals are typically not afraid of him... unlike people, who usually run screaming, even animals like chickens can sense his well intentions.
In addition, he can howl songs.
[Affection] Anything and everything is allowed, have at him.
[Fighting] Go for it. He's got like a dozen weapons. He's really nice though so it's unlikely he'll fight you unless you're causing trouble.
