Unfortunately I have spicy loving critters. I built a cube with a hinged lid out of 2x4s, then stapled quarter inch hardware cloth over all sides. We have issues with everything out here surrounded by woods, and I was working toward keeping the bears out, but it keeps everything out as well, and I am the only one on the road that does not have to clean up, or wait to put the garbage out.
I've seen similar, but really have very little room between the edge of the road and the front split rail fence. It would probably be a hazard where I am, especially since the road is a nominal 40mph. [Which means that sometimes the bikes and pickups slow down to about 50.] Also of course around here it takes plate steel and special latches to become bear proof. One of them got four of our feeders - while up on my deck - a bit earlier this season.

It certainly beats using a snow shovel in the street in the middle of August.

I also know that we bought it especially for this task because absolutely I know that it's not good for my stomach or points south.
