Nakamaru didn't like to admit that he was jealous, but he couldn't help it when Junno came to him asking for advice about Koki.
“I don't understand,” he complained. It was after work, and everyone else had left, leaving the two of them alone.
“What do you not understand?” Nakamaru asked with a sigh. If he couldn't say anything about his feelings, the least he could do was be a compassionate and empathetic ear. Because honestly, Kame wouldn't care and Ueda would most likely share what was said. He couldn't keep a secret. He had a big mouth.
“I don't understand why Koki always rejects me when I ask him to hang out,” he pouted. “What am I doing wrong?” Nakamaru frowned slightly, leaning back on his chair.
“I don't think it's anything you're doing wrong,” he said carefully. “I think it's just Koki.” Junno sighed, flopping down face first on the sofa in their dressing room.
“Mmf do gah,” he mumbled, voice muffled by the couch.
“Could you repeat that clearly?” Nakamaru requested, almost wanting to laugh. Junno turned onto his side.
“It makes no sense,” he said. “Somehow it's like it changed, but I don't know why.” Nakamaru frowned, feeling bad for Junno. Nakamaru didn't like seeing him hurt or disappointed by Koki, it hurt him in a way too.
“Don't worry Junno, I'm sure it's nothing.”
“I wish I could believe that,” he muttered, barely loud enough for Nakamaru to hear him.
“Believe it.” Nakamaru nodded. “Now get off your lazy butt, do you want to come over and play games?”
“Ah, really?” Junno's face lit up at the mention of games.
“Yeah,” Nakamaru smiled, glad to see him happy again.
“Okay, let's go!” Junno grinned, standing up and grabbing his bad.
Nakamaru liked that he was usually the only one who could cheer Junno up when he was upset about Koki. That was enough, wasn't it?

A few days later they had choreography practice again. What Nakamaru didn't expect was to walk in on Koki yelling at Junno. They were both startled by his entrance as Koki seethed and Junno looked down at the floor, obviously upset.
“What's going on here?” Nakamaru asked hesitantly, looking between the two of them.
“I leave for one second and when I came back he was going through my bag!” Koki said, sounding exasperated. Nakamaru frowned, looking to Junno for some sort of confirmation. He latter just kept his head low, not saying anything.
“Look Junno, I'm sorry okay? I'm just not in the mood to put up with this shit today.” He then walked out without another word. Junno looked up at him, and Nakamaru could see the hurt in his eyes. He inwardly cursed Koki for being dense enough not to realize Junno's feelings.
“I was only leaving him something,” Junno mumbled. “I thought I would surprise him with his favourite sweets, but then this happened.”
“Oh Junno,” Nakamaru sighed. “Your intentions are good, but you can't just do something like that for Koki and not expect something like this would happen.” Junno hung his head again, nodding slightly.
“Are you okay?” Nakamaru asked softly. Junno nodded again, sighing deeply as he looked up to face Nakamaru again. His eyes looked sad, and that hurt Nakamaru more than Junno would ever know.
“Forget about Koki for now,” Nakamaru suggested. “You did nothing wrong, and he was being a jerk to you.” Junno sighed again.
“Yeah, I suppose that's true. I was only trying to do something nice for him.”
“Exactly,” Nakamaru nodded. “And he reacted in a bad way, so you're not the one at fault here.”
“I guess you're right,” Junno frowned. “But he's still mad at me. What do I do about that?”
“The only thing you can do is make sure he knows what you were actually doing and that he doesn't actually have any reason to be mad at you.” Junno nodded, smiling slightly.
“Thanks Yuichi.” Nakamaru just gave him a sad smile in return as Junno went to meet the others. Nakamaru lingered behind, sighing as he shut off the light in their dressing room. Why did he have to be the good guy, and keep his feelings to himself as the object of his affections pined after Koki? It just wasn't fair.

“I'm going to tell him how I feel,” Junno told him one day. Nakamaru set his magazine down, trying to keep his expression carefully blank.
“You mean Koki?” he asked, stomach dropping.
“Yeah,” Junno nodded. “It's not doing either of us any good to keep it to myself.”
“I suppose that's true,” Nakamaru agreed, struggling to keep his face even. He knew that Junno was setting himself up to be hurt.
“But I'm not sure how to,” he complained. Junno sat down across from Nakamaru at the table and rested his chin in his hands.
“Just tell him simply,” Nakamaru advised, sighing deeply. “There isn't much to lose, just do it.”
“But what about our relationship?” Junno asked worriedly. “If he says no, it would get all weird and tense with him right? And that wouldn't be good for KAT-TUN.”
“You can't know for sure what he would say,” Nakamaru said carefully. “But even if he did reject you, Koki is the type of guy who wouldn't let that happen.”
“Really?” he asked skeptically. Nakamaru sent him a sad smile.
“When have I ever been wrong?” Junno just looked at him.
“Eh,” he sighed again. “I hope you're right.”
“Don't worry,” Nakamaru advised. It was getting more difficult to keep his voice even. He had missed his chance, he knew it. Junno smiled at him.
“You're really helpful, thanks Yuichi.” Nakamaru nodded, looking down at the table.
“I try,” he responded, voice cracking. He coughed to try and cover it up, but he didn't miss the odd look that Junno gave him. He had to put his feelings aside, no matter how much it hurt him. Nakamaru just couldn't believe he was helping the object of his affections go after someone else.
“Are you okay?” Junno asked, looking at him with concern.
“Eh?” he asked, confused by the sudden question. Junno scratched the back of his head, looking down with a frown.
“You spaced out, I don't know.”
“Ah,” Nakamaru sighed. “I'm fine, don't worry.”
“Thanks for always listening, Yuichi. You're a great friend.”
Nakamaru blinked, focusing his energy on not reacting in a way he would regret.
“It's not a problem,” he forced out. “It's the least I could do.”

Nakamaru didn't like to admit that he could be a bit overprotective, but he couldn't help but want to punch Koki when the next time he saw Junno, he was quite upset. He was face down on the sofa in their dressing room when Nakamaru found him.
“Junno?” he asked uneasily, setting his things down.
“Yuichi?” he responded, not moving from his spot.
“Yeah it's me,” he confirmed. “What's wrong?”
“It didn't work out,” he mumbled. “I should have figured he would reject me.” Nakamaru didn't say anything, pulling a chair up close to the couch.
“What happened?” he asked, leaning on the arm of it. Junno didn't budge, staying silent for a long moment before sighing deeply.
“I told him,” Junno mumbled, voice only slightly muffled. “He was nice about it though. He told me that he had figured that out a while ago. He said he didn't feel the same, and now I just feel stupid because I wasted so much time on worrying and liking him when he didn't like me back...” he trailed off, manoeuvring his position so his face was resting on his arms.
“I,” Nakamaru started, unsure of what to say. “I'm sorry to hear about that.”
“I'm angry at myself more,” Junno continued. “I wasted energy on something that wasn't going to happen either way.”
“Hey,” Nakamaru chided, lightly tapping the top of Junno's head. “It's not a waste. You learned something from it surely. And it's not like you could help it. Besides, these things happen, even to the best people.” Junno looked up at him and it killed Nakamaru to see how hurt he looked.
“I really wish it didn't hurt so much,” he moaned, putting his face back down.
“I do too,” Nakamaru replied, almost in a whisper.
“Eh?” Junno looked up again. “What did you say?”
“Huh? Ah, no, it's nothing.” Nakamaru shook his head. “I just wish I didn't have to see you like this, you're usually so full of smiles and energy, it's almost painful to see.” Junno stared at him, something changing in his expression.
“Sorry,” he apologized, a smile playing on his lips. Nakamaru looked down, feeling his face heat up.
“It's okay. You don't need to apologize,” he mumbled. “I just hate seeing you like this.”
“I'll try to cheer up then,” he said with a decisive nod. Nakamaru smiled back slightly, stretching his arms upwards.
“That's more like it.” Junno adjusted his position so he was sitting up.
“We should go meet the others,” Nakamaru said, standing up.
“Wait,” Junno stopped him, standing up as well.
“What is it?” Nakamaru asked, turning back around only to be met by Junno's strong arms surrounding him. He felt his heart accelerate and his face heat up not soon after. Nakamaru hesitantly reciprocated the hug stiffly.
“Thanks Yuichi,” Junno whispered near his ear. “And I'm sorry.” Nakamaru didn't get a chance to ask about what, since the next moment Junno let go and left the room, leaving Nakamaru standing there in silent shock. He sat down on the couch heavily, wiping at his eyes. Maybe Junno wasn't as dense as he thought...
