Title: This one’s for you.
Pairing: Nakamaru/Ueda
Genre: Fluff, romance, kinda hurt/comfort
Rating: PG
Summary: Both Nakamaru and Ueda note something about the others solo song.
Note: I guess this is really set right after the Chain album release. (And this is noting that apparently all songs have a reason so somehow it makes sense okay?)
“What if we could return to where we were that day,
Would your voice reach out to me one more time?
No longer will I cry these selfish tears.
So would you take me back into your arms?
Snow begins to fall, as the telephone keeps its silence”
“What are you doing?” Nakamaru shot up at the sound of the voice, taking an ear bud out and glancing over at Kame.
“Nothing really, just killing some time before practice I guess,” he responded with a shrug. Kame eyed him carefully.
“Is everything okay?” Nakamaru shut his music player off and gave Kame a curious look.
“Yeah I’m fine, why do you ask?” Kame continued looking at him and shrugged.
“You seem really thoughtful is all.”
“I think I’m just a bit tired~ there’s really nothing to worry about.” Kame just looked at him again and gave a short nod before going to warm up, not saying another word.
What Nakamaru didn’t say was that Ueda’s lyrics were haunting him - and he really had no idea why, but he couldn’t get them out of his head. Ueda never really wrote songs that didn’t have some sort of meaning, so he couldn’t help but wonder what sort of profound happening would cause him to write something like this.
“Maybe there’s something I’m missing…” He murmured to himself, eyes closing as the lyrics and melody played through his mind again.
“Never again will I experience this kind of love
to me you were the whole world
Please, will you smile for me, will you get mad at me? Just once more?
Why couldn't we go back to the beginning of our time?
I would never be able to forget you...”
Maybe it was something completely different - maybe it wasn’t something Ueda had actually experienced, but Nakamaru knew how much effort and feeling Ueda put into his songs, and he loved that. He loved listening to Ueda’s voice, expressing these kinds of feelings. There was something mesmerizing about it. Nakamaru sighed softly and ran a hand through his hair and stood up, going over to where Kame was practicing the choreography for Birth.
Surely both his thoughts and his feelings could wait.

“Your profile that is reflected in the blue-stained glass of the window
as we're driving past through the vividly changing town
Flashback, if you can recall, want to cry, on the brink of tears
I'll embrace your trembling shoulders.
Face to face with anything and everything, like magic, let you forget
Lean on me, only trust me.”
Ueda leant back against the couch, flashing back to the road trip he and Nakamaru had taken a few months before to Hakone, memories flooding just by hearing those few lyrics. His eyes closed and he focused on the sound of Nakamaru’s voice as opposed to what he was singing for the time being.
“I wonder who this was written about…” He murmured softly to himself.
“Who what’s about?” Ueda opened his eyes and looked up at the sound of the voice, noticing that Koki had come in. Ueda sat up straighter and took his headphones off, shaking his head.
“Just Yuichi’s song, he obviously had someone in mind, right?” Koki flopped on the couch beside him, shrugging.
“Knowing Yucchi, he probably did.” Koki shrugged, glancing at him.
“It makes me wonder,” Ueda admitted with a small frown, thinking over the lyrics again. “Who is the person that Yuichi has such feelings for…?” Koki chuckled softly and shook his head, his lips turning into a smile.
“So until I met you I certainly didn't notice my weaknesses
The more I think I love you, I secretly become wrapped up in becoming stronger for you
The two of us walking together at a speed carved by the beat
Not in a rush, step by step, Love is here embracing love.”
“I’m certain that person is a lot closer than you think, Tat-chan.” Ueda looked over at Koki, confusion evident on his face.
“What do you mean?” Koki winked at him, and Ueda looked away to hide the faint blush coloring his cheeks.
“So for the sake of meeting you, I passed through all of time to finally arrive at this place
the vow of loving you is my wish to walk with you more.
Let's walk and go together to a life-sized future
To the heart step by step…”
“I think you’d be surprised.”

“Is Step by Step written about me?” Ueda’s quiet voice brought Nakamaru out of his thoughts, looking up to see the other, who was looking around.
Was that shyness?
“E-eh ma,” Nakamaru stuttered, a bit put back by the sudden question. He rubbed the back of his neck, not making any move to deny it.
“I was going to ask you who Again was written about, but then I remembered…” Ueda’s sharp inhale didn’t go unnoticed to Nakamaru. “I remembered the road trip we took shortly after that happened, to get away, I guess.”
“I remember too…”
“And then I told you to lean on me,” Nakamaru continued, speaking softly as he looked down at the cup of tea in front of him. “I guess I was really literal ne?”
“So Koki was right… But why me, Yuichi? Why do you want that with me of all people?” Ueda took a deep breath and looked at him, eyes watering slightly. “I’m broken.”
“I think we’re all broken, in a way.” Nakamaru responded softly, standing up to face Ueda. “It’s just about founding someone who will accept and cherish every part of you.”
“I don’t understand…” Ueda murmured, averting his gaze to the floor. “I don’t understand how you can be so amazing to me like this, I don't even understand how you make me feel.”
“I don’t understand it much either, but I know the feelings I have are real. Tatsuya...You deserve so much happiness.”
“I’m not over him…”
“I know, and I understand that, but at some point, if you agree to this, I’ll hold a bigger part in your heart than Ryo ever did.” Nakamaru walked slowly up to Ueda, drawing him into his arms. Nakamaru hummed the song soothingly as Ueda began shaking, letting his tears fall again.
“If you want to...We can take things step by step, right?”
On days when we come together and laugh, on days where we cry … step by step.
Let's not walk in a rush or in a hurry, I'll be with you … One love, forever more
