Accomplices to Killer Katrina

It's impossible to put into words how I feel about the response to this disaster. People are dying in the streets from lack of water, food, medical attention and shelter. According to one news network, there are fires inside the SuperDome and no National Guard troups or law enforcement officers anywhere to keep order in an increasingly volatile ( Read more... )

This is exactly what I was ranting about at work yesterday and thinking about today as I read what's happening. Excuse my language, but is this fucking Indonesia, or the fattest goddamn most technologically advanced country in the world? Why isn't there a SWARM, a FLEET of military helicopters and boats and tanks and whatever in there getting those people the hell OUT before they die from thirst, hunger, or the cesspool they're waiting in? Why the HELL weren't these rescue forces (and, like you, I have the very highest admiration and respect for the actual forces, the ground troops who're in there and who will be in there) MOBILIZED and waiting on SUNDAY when they knew the damn thing was coming and had an excellent chance of doing EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED?

(Sorry. I'm yelling.)

Given our administration it could easily be either racism or plain ol' stupidity or a combination of both. They saw this damn' storm coming and everyone knew New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen. Why has it been a week and there're still thousands and ( ... )

...because I'm pissed off I'd like to add that if the people in the South wore turbans, Bush would've had the National Guard and the military down there before the storm even hit. Not with aid, mind you ...

I LOVE your rant. If I wasn't worried about waking up everyone within earshot, I'd be yelling "Yes, yes, yes!!!".

Get your priorities straight, Mr. Bush. How about a zero tolerance toward THIRST AND HUNGER AND EXPOSURE AND MISERY???

Argh! Yes! What are these people (aka the president and FEMA and congress) smoking that makes them think this is okay?

I couldn"t answer last night because I was too angry after watching the news. They knew fine this hurricane was coming and its implications, and the people who couldn't evacuate would be the poor. As of this morning, still no relief to the 20 000 and they're busing more peope TO the dome!

I see today that things are really moving, after a public outcry so fierce it woke up the state and federal powers that be. But the mayor of New Orleans is condemning the federal government on the radio, and I think he should look in the mirror.

This morning there's a convoy of SUVs pulling small boats with outboard motors into town today. NOW I worry about the rescuers going into that water. And I worry about the people who have to recover bodies. There are a few fires in the city that are out of control. One wonders, after the water is drained, if there shouldn't be a city-wide controlled fire to cremate the bodies, turn all the debris to ash, wipe out the mold, and purify the ground. Does this sound too drastic?
