It will read, with varying levels of success, .html files, plus Microsoft Word files (.doc), Rich Text Files (.rtf), Acrobat files (.pdf), plus a bunch of different commercial eBook formats (some Kindle, epub, eReader, etc)
For fan fic, it depends on how the html page is formatted--some of them have a lot of code at the front that makes it hard for the reader to get to the content. I have more luck finding converted files (or converting them to Word and cleaning them up myself.) There's an excellent resource for longer-form fan fic that's been converted here:
