CHARACTER INFO
NAME: Envy (William Imre Elric)
FANDOM: FullMetal Alchemist
CLASS: Originally of the higher class, Envy is illegally using hair dyes and wigs now to keep himself in the slums.
PERSONALITY: At one time Envy had been a very idealistic child, someone that was bright and optimistic, and very intelligent for being of such a young age. When Envy turned ten there was a drastic change in his personality, however, and since that time it has only grown darker.
Envy is quicksilver personified, a chameleon that can blend into his surroundings, a snake that can shed its' skin and become whatever it wants to become. And as much as his physical appearances can be deceiving, so too can his personality be misleading.
He is what his name implies, an envious character no matter the face he puts on. Everything that others are that he is not, what they have that he cannot have, he desires it all. His jealousy of other people runs so deep in his veins, bred into him by his mother, that he will go to extreme lengths to take from other people what he wants, even going so far as to kill without remorse, without concern for what blood may stain his hands.
Because of his background Envy is really quite dissatisfied with himself. He is unhappy with his physical appearance and the genetic make-up of his person. He loathes the blood of his father coursing through him, and while he does not hate his mother, he despises the part of him that is weak as she too is weak. He struggles day-to-day to overcome that weakness, that which makes him lesser than others, than those with light hair (even though in reality his own is a sandy shade of blonde), and he strives to work from the bottom of society to the top... refusing to be handed luxury and live blindly in temporary comfort. Due to his dissatisfaction with himself, however, Envy is unable to trust readily in other people anymore, and sympathizing for them has become so foreign that the word itself seems to have lost all meaning.
Other peoples' troubles are not his own, and he's instead quite happy if people around him are miserable -- it makes him feel better.
He has been known to partner up with people now and then to accomplish certain tasks within the city, but generally these partnerships are short lived and extremely limited in contact. He prefers to work behind the scenes when he can, even though he adores face time now and then, which has resulted in making a very infamous name for himself in the slums. He embraces being the Bogeyman of Tanagura, so-to-speak... and anybody who knows his name knows that he is the worst of the Seven Deadly Sins, a true evil, living and breathing... and killing as it sees fit to.
There is no act of ill credit to which he will not commit, and similarly, there is no evil deed to be done that he will regret. Now that he's been warped so far, if paid enough, he'd even fillet the skin off of his own mother's back. The sick part about that is, he'd downright enjoy it, too.
He possesses a strong dislike of most animals besides amphibians and lizards... particularly a hatred towards cats and dogs and most other common domestic pets. If it could be said that he fears anything at all, it is being utterly ignored and forgotten.
And if he ever had a goal... something real to focus his hatred upon... it would be his father, a man he wants to destroy from the inside out for making him what he is and bringing to life his fear... for ever forgetting him, casting him away for the favored baby brother, Edward.
BACKGROUND: Every once in a while a child is born that is unlike any other before it, and every once in a while there is a child recognized for achieving something great Sometimes, just sometimes, there is a child fortunate enough to be born an example of both... though not always is the result what it is expected to be. After all, not all great things are good.
Envy was born as William Imre Elric, the son of Dante Alighieri and Hohenheim Elric, lovers from opposite ends of the social spectrum. However, because of taking after his father with his bright eyes and blonde hair he was given to Hohenheim to be raised, his mother cast back into the slums from whence she came like some creature of the dark. Forbidden to continue, the relationship between Hohenheim and Dante ended, the woman left feeling cheated and bitter.
As for Envy, well, he seemed to prosper without her. With Hohenheim as a teacher instead he had resources at his fingertips that Dante would never have been able to offer him, otherwise. He learned to talk earlier than most infants, and walking was of no issue, either. His father, while not overly attentive all of the time, gave Envy plenty to do around their home, and always he had at his beck and call the servants and a personal nanny.
For three years life remained simple like that... for three years Envy was a happy enough child, thoroughly spoiled, but with everything that he could ever want within arms reach. However, one day Hohenheim came home from work with extra baggage in his arms. Envy had been only three years old at the time... so he didn't quite understand why Hohenheim had a one year old boy with him, and a smaller child, barely a few months old by the looks of him. His initial thought was to think Hohenheim was replacing him... but when he worked up the courage to ask, his father told him that the older boy, Edward, and the younger boy, Alphonse, were his brothers... that they would be staying there now, that they would have a more fulfilling family.
Naturally Envy wanted to know why his mother wasn't there, too. Hohenheim said only that the woman had died and he had been fortunate to find Envy's brothers... and he had left it at that.
Accepting two new bodies into the house that had as much authority as himself, or more for their needy age, was hard... but as the years went on, Envy became quite used to the idea of having younger brothers, of being the eldest who knew best about everything! They learned to function as a trio and were quite inseparable to start... that was until law settled in and Alphonse was old enough to be placed back in his mother's care in middle class society. His darker toned hair had those of the upper class rejecting his eligibility, and before Envy knew it, another lie had been spun and Hohenheim was telling Edward and himself that Alphonse had gone to stay with a friend of the family. When asked why he would always respond with a curt, "You are too young to understand right now... do not worry about it."
It was due to these lack of explanations and having had a leg of the tripod kicked out from under them that Ed and Envy banded together thereafter. They were a terrible twosome, capable of much mischief, and often where one was getting into trouble, the other was not far behind. Hohenheim thought nothing of their closeness, even encouraged them when he could because he thought their trust in each other was a way of healing due to the loss of Alphonse. He never did see it for the dependency that it was...
...not until it was too late.
Envy was nine years old when he met a woman named Dante in the streets while he was outside late at night exploring. She looked to have seen a ghost when their eyes met... and something about the woman convinced Envy that she wouldn't hurt him... even if he could see the traces of her dark hair beneath her heavy hood. She claimed to know his father, she claimed Envy was her son and that Hohenheim had stolen him away from her nine years ago. She recited his name to him in full... she told him why he had been named such, and admitted the name itself had never suited her little boy to begin with.
Dante even told Envy while he was paralyzed and listening to her... that Alphonse and Edward were not his real brothers. She admitted to having been watching the family, and she admitted she wanted her son back. But before she could say more they were rudely interrupted by police... and Dante had fled hurriedly after making Envy promise to come to the slums to find her another night.
For a year they managed to talk back and forth with one another... and late at night Envy would make frequent visits to go and see his mother, a woman who was supposed to be dead, but was there before him... as real as anything he had thought he used to know. Perhaps more real, even... as his whole life up until then had been based on a lie.
It didn't take long for her to convince him that Hohenheim was an evil man... and due to that his home life began suffering. He treated his father with less and less respect, however, even knowing the truth about Edward he was still kind to him. After all, Edward hadn't known the truth, he'd been lied to as well. But when Hohenheim began to openly favor Ed... well, Envy knew that he couldn't stay there any longer. It was time to go.
By the time he was ten he had prepared enough in advance through planning with Dante and studying the city... and he had crafted a fool proof plan to escape to the slums and be with his mother. He wasn't afraid of their segregation, thought that the dark haired people of Tanagura were probably the most honest people out of everyone. And while not overly concerned with honesty, amongst them he would at least know the truth of the world around him, he wouldn't be pampered and sheltered and helpless... no shade would be drawn over his eyes ever again. But one thing had not went according to plan the night of his escape; Edward had woken up and found him missing, and in the foyer of their home he had stopped Envy... and demanded to know where he was going.
Envy had done the only thing he could think of. He had given Edward his armored knight action figure... and told him to hold onto it for a while, that he would come back for it one day. Right now, he had said, he needed to do something important and he was trusting Edward not to tell anybody that he'd seen him. Ed, only eight at the time, was confused... worried... but loyal. He'd agreed not knowing Envy had no intention of ever coming back. And with that the boy known as William Elric had left that paradise the light hairs lived in... and he took himself to the slums where he became the monster known as Envy.
Over the years the cruelty of those darker streets changed him. Dante disappeared, and he was forced to raise himself. Stealing, selling drugs, sex, killing... none of it was foreign anymore. His hands were more stained than a butcher's... and the worst part was, years of exposure to that horrible life had taught him to enjoy causing the suffering of others. He kept his identity a secret by illegally dying his hair a dark shade of green... and he became somewhat an iconic figure in amongst the dregs of society, a figure few seldom saw, but many openly feared.
He was a monster... through and through. No trace at all remained of the kind little boy he had once been many years ago.
