Summary: pseudo-spoiler. Artie is knocked out of his wheelchair and Tina helps him out. (Only I would take the most angsty spoiler ever and write fluff, ha.)
The sun was shining high in the sky. The spring day was almost too perfect. I had to smile, my thoughts on the here and now. I couldn't think about how, in a few weeks, this would all be over. I looked up at my companion, the one person who had been by my side from the very beginning. Tina sensed my glance and smirked down at me. She pushed her hair out of her face. She was so different lately; I admired that she actually spoke her mind. Somehow no matter how much had changed, we were still the same. "What?"
I just shrugged. For once, I had run out of things to say. No matter what else happened, I knew she was someone I could count on through thick and thin. "Race you home?"
Tina nodded and she braced herself for a moment before taking off at a high clip. I took it easy, knowing I was faster than her. I don't think a lot of people realize that wheelchairs are actually much faster than a person running. That's why wheelchair marathons start before the regular race.
Tina looked back at me. "I know you can do better than that. I've raced you before, remember?"
I had to chuckle, remembering our freshman year. How could I ever forget?
I pulled out all the stops, pushing myself as fast as I could. I easily overtook Tina and she struggled to keep up.
"Hey, no fair!" she called, and I could almost hear the echo across time.
I just smiled, flying through the wind.
Suddenly, I ground to a stop, so quickly that I was knocked out of my chair. Luckily I didn't have far to fall, but I still groaned from where I landed. That was going to hurt tomorrow.
Tina raced up to me quickly. "Oh no, Artie! Are you OK?"
I just nodded. "I think so." I brushed the dirt off of me and pushed myself up to be sitting. "Weird, I don't think I ran into anything."
"Look at your wheels, they're in shreds."
I could feel the dread setting in before I even looked. Sure enough, the wheels on my chair were a disaster. I reached down and felt the asphalt of the wide driveway where I had landed. I nodded; it was hot. "The driveway is super-heated from the sun and I must have overfilled my wheels this morning. The pressure was too much, they basically exploded."
Tina shook her head. "How are you gonna get home?"
I looked up at her, knowing I really had no choice right now. I blushed. "Well, that's what friends are for..."
