Summary: Chad and Jason discuss Chad's past.

Chad Rainier lifted the heavy dumbbell, flexing his muscles easily. With each repetition, he let out a little of his stress, but it ran too deeply. He grunted, trying to forget his problems. He had his kids to think about. As if on cue, Jason walked down the stairs into the basement. He rose his eyebrows at Chad as he crossed over to the chess board. “Do you wanna play?” The boy asked.

Chad was in the middle of a good workout, but maybe a change of pace would do him good. He set down the dumbbell and sighed, walking over to Jason. He knew his logic skills could use the improvement, it would help him at work. Chad sat down at the chess board, even though he already knew Jason would win. He still didn’t understand where the kid came from, he was practically a genius. While Chad and Shelly were nothing special, most of the time they didn’t bother to think about anything too deeply. Their three other boys, Sammy, Tyler and Max seemed to take after their parents, but Jason was just so different. Chad had to smile, he had never planned to have a large family, but he didn’t regret it.

“What’s so funny?” Jason asked, obviously noticing his father’s smile.

Chad shook his head, remembering himself. That same family also meant he had to work at all hours of the day or night, that there was never enough room or food in the house. He grunted, almost clenching his jaw. “Nothing, let’s play.”

Jason shook his head, probably not wanting to get into a discussion about it. Chad hated to see that his son had inherited his worst trait, his foul temper. They played in silence for a few minutes. Chad knew enough about the game to see that Jason was winning, but somehow he couldn’t manage to outmaneuver him. The game almost reminded him of his army days, planning out the best attack. The knowledge still came in handy now that he was a police officer. You always had to know how to handle a situation. Chad was getting frustrated, but he just grumbled to himself.

“Dad?” Jason looked up suddenly. “Can I ask you something?”

Chad was on guard. “What is it?”

“Who is Josh Hill?”

Chad gasped and froze. He didn’t know how to react. Suddenly, he stood up and shoved the chess board off the table. Jason flinched and looked down. Chad was suddenly furious. “Where did you see that? Who have you been talking to?”

“No one, I swear! I was bored and I looked us all up online. I saw an article about what happened to Josh…”

Chad could feel his anger pushing up to the surface, but what was he supposed to do? He would never resort to violence. He clenched his fists and looked away. He tried to gather his strength. Chad should have known his kids would find out eventually, but he hadn’t expected this. Finally, he looked back up at his son. “I don’t know what you read, but it’s all true. I was a little headstrong and I caused a crazy accident. Every day, I face the guilt and my own accusations. I could have prevented it, I know it. It’s like he became deathless, living eternally inside of me, saying, ‘don’t forget about me.’ How could I ever forget?” He had to pause, shake his head and sigh. “Don’t tell your brothers. I know they’re like a herd sometimes, but this is best dealt with one on one.”

Jason just nodded. “I understand. Thanks for telling me.”

Chad just looked away. “Now if you don’t mind, I have to continue my strength training.”

Jason just walked away silently.
